Atlanta Man Is Badly Cut
Atlanta.—P. M. Spinks, 26 years old,
of Decatur, Ga., was badly cut about
tho neck as the result of a distur
bance occurring in front of the post-
office recently. W. L. Ellenbery and
J, B. Hicks, are being held in default
of $1,000 bonds in connection with
the cutting of Spinks, Both deny the
charge. Hicks declared that the
trouble started when Spinks made
Improper remarks to Mrs. Hicks. A
fight started, he said, and someone
in the crowd wielded the knife. Ellen
bery corroborated Hicks’ statement.
Marine suspected in woman's Death
Norfolk, Va.—A United States ma
rine Is being held under observation
at the baracks here in connection
with the death of Mrs. Ruth Mercer,
whose body was found on the beach
at Ocean View. No arrest has been
.made, hut Norfolk detectives have vis-
’lted the barracks and after securing a
partial identification of him as the man
with whom It is claimed the young
woman was last seen, It is said, asked
that he bo not allowed to leave the
reservation. His name could not be
learned from the police.

of tho new hospital for negro veterans

contracts for the mechanical equip
ment and building work on the insti
tution wil be let by May 10.
Daring Attempts To Rescue Dog3
Stone Mountain. — Risking their
lives by dangling in midair at the
end of a 600-foot rope, from the steep
side of Stone Mountain, W. O. Ven
able and Ronald Venable Sunday af
ternoon again will attempt to rescue
two fine fox dogs that have been im
prisoned since Thursday in a little
crevice of the Great Rock. While
chasing a red fox, the two dogs,
Smutt and Cap, went over the moun
tainside, hurdling and sliding until
they fell into the crevice.
