By DOUOIjAS Tounsi.ky.
A most sticmmful your is drawing to a
close at Purry High ttohool. During tho
year just fluinhod n. vast amount of work
has boon dono and tho pupils hnvo gain
ed a gront doal of knowlodgo. All this, , -
has boon dono in spits of llio fact that 0< * per cent of

out-of-

And then wo do notliing to got a now

Have tho pooplo of Perry no civic
prido, no community Bpivitf Can it bo
possible that Porry, with a well dosorvod
reputation of being a most cultured
town, is going to allow this to languish
and drop because of the lack of a school
* fehildpjgt It is high time that tho poo
plo of Porry and tho surrounding country
await o to tho fact that they aro olioating
themselves, tholr children and llioir pos
terity by forcing the! present generation
to attend Hohool in an old, worn out, nn-
tlquatod and dilapidated house. In snob

aro now imposed, laboring urnlor such
disadvantages aR wo now iiavo to put up

est oxtontf Is it fair to tho child, to lot
a fow paltry dollars stand In tho way of

life? Or avo wo, like tho Chinoso, going
to sit calmly down, fold our bunds and
say: "Thst building was good enough
for our groat-graudfathers ami its good
enough for our children!” Yes koro-
,wno lamps and buggies were good
'enough for our ane.ostors put whoro

if tho people of l-’orry could only s->o

would lmvo ono i n six months. All the
surroundlig towns Iiavo soon thoir need
and lmvo mot it, only Perry is loft .tug
ging along behind.
A plan has boon proponod whoroby n
school district bo created, having Porry
for a center and taking in all tho sur
rounding country within a ratio of six or
seven ratios-. Tho property within thifi
Sorritory would bo worth several millions
dollars. With a tax of 01.10 or two

“CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS”
By Doiiatiiy Bkunson
If wo are a firm beliver in tliis
Jamilntr statement, why should
we not practice it? Unsanitary
surroundings and uncloauljuess'
hurt a town, not only morally biit
it hurts its growth and good name.
Our community; prido is 'reflected
in the way our streets are kept.
Instead of having a clean-up day
«very April, why not make every
day in Perry, a “Clean up Day.”
It certainly wouUl’nt take much
1 line or money. Then tho people
would begin to take pride and
interest in Perry.
Not only should our streets and
home premises be kept clean but
«very place of business should be
kept clean in some way. Our
stores should be kept jnst as
orderly and attractively as our
homes.
The ladies of the Civic Improve
ment Club have done wonders
towards improving the looks of
Perry. Look at tho little garden
raider the tank, the Court House
Square and other spots that they
have helped to improve. It seems
that if they could work so hard
improving Perry,‘ we could co-
operate-with them by keeping our
own premises clean- If every one
would do his bit towards improv
ing Perry, think w hat a fine, <towu"
tit would become.
Good Peaches.
36 per cent of tho members in con
gress; 47 percent of the speakers
in the house; 54 per cent of tho
vico-presiefents; 62 per cent of the
secretaries of state; 50 per cent of
tho secretaries of treasury; 67.per
cent of 1,ho at torneys general; 69
per cent of the justices of the su
preme oourt; and 50 per cent of
the men comprising the Constitu
tional Convention.
Did you know further that with
no schooling only 31 out of 5,000,*
000 people have attained distinc
tion; with elementary schooling
808 out of 33,000,000; with high
school education, 1245 out of 2,-
000,000; with college education,
5768 out of 1,000,000? In other
words, the boy with no schooling
has L chance in 150,000; with ele
mentary schooling, 4 chances in
150,000; with pig® school oduca*
tion 87 chances in 150,000; with
college education 800 chances in
150,000.
And further. Every day spoilt
in school pays the student $9.02.
Proof; Uneducated laborers earn
cm the average $500 a year, total
for 40 years $20,000; high school
graduates earn on Hie average
$l,0t)0 a year, total for 40 years
$10,000; col logo graduates of
Piineeton University earned on
the average for ten years, 1901 to
Bill, $2,000 per year, total for 40
years $80,000; the: high school
course requires 1.2 years of school
of 180 days eac|i, total 2160 clays,
If 2160 clays add $20,000 to tho in*
oomo for life, thou each day acids
$9 02; four yoars in college adds
827.77 for each day spout in col
lege.
Again. Massachusetts gave her
citizens 7 years schooling and they
produced per capta $260 per year;
tho United States gave her citizens
4.4 years schooling and they pro
duced per capta $170 per .year;
Tennessee gave her citizens 3 years
schooling and they produced' per
capta $116 per year.
We lmt en’t the statistics of our
.own state relative to this, but by
the natural laws of reasoning we
conclude tliat Georgia falls far
short-of either of the above figures;
for we rank 43 among the 48 states
in education. North Carolina,
Smith‘Carolina, Mississippi, Ala
bama and Arkansas aro the only
states ranking below Georgia.
Only 4,000 out of every 100,000

half of these go to college and a I
