DO NOT LET PEACH SEASON RUSH
INTERFERE WITH PROPER DISPOSITION
OF REFUSE FRUIT
Great qu unities of cul} peaches
are now being thrown out into
ditches and qlher places from the
packing sheds during the rush of
peach season without giving them
further attention. This is a very
risky and dangerous practice and
these who do it • aro materially
helping to reinfest the
peach belt of Georgia with curculio-
aud brown rot, The practice is a
serious menace to the peach iu-
dustry and effects all growers. For
the sake of the industry’s future
the full cooperation of the growers
in promptly disp sing of refuse
fruit is paramount, and steps
should be taken to make those
neglect or disregard this warning
give the matter immediate at
tention. Many growers, especially
those with ftnall acerages, have
endeavored to rid their orchards
and packing sheds of all culled
and fallen fruit by buiying or
otherwise disposing of it, however
this practice oa their part accomp
lishes little if large piles of culls
are left exposed from other sheds.
TYPHOID FEYER VACCINE.
The typhoid fever season has
come and many people in Georgia
are still unprotected so far as be
ing vaccinated is concerned. Time
and again the Stale Board of
Health aud the County Boards of
Health have sent out warnings and
advised, even begged the people to
be vaccinated. Last year 798 peo
ple who turned a deaf ear to such
timely advice have already crossed
to the unknown.
Any one who wants typhoid vac
cine this year had better order at
once. The supply is by no means
unlimited.
Order your vaccine from the
State Board of Health today. Have
your physician or health officer ad
minister it at once.

and dropped fruit contains one or
more larvas of the curculio.
When such fruit is left exposed
these larvae soon leave and go into
the soil to pupate, emerging an
adult beetles before Fall to hiber
nate during the Winter. The size
of the curculio infestation iu 1923
will be in proportion to the number
of booties that succeed in hiber
nating throughout the coming
year. Furthermore;, exposed cull
piles are great sources of brown
rot danger. The fruit soon rots
and uummifies and in this way
the disease is carried over Winter
Next Spring millions of spores are
dissemnated from these piles of
nummified fruit to start rot in the
now crop. Experiments show that
brown rot mumies are able to pro
duce spores for eight consecutive
seasons.
All fruit in the orchard should
also be disposed of immediately
after each variety is harvested.
Not only should the fruit be pick
ed up that fell during harvesting
operations, but all frui,ts missed
by the pickers should be stripped
from the trees. This practice pre
vents the development of brown
rot cankers on the twigs from
mummified fruits. The cankered
twigs also serve to carry the
disease over Winter.
The knowledge of these facts as
the future success of the industry
should be a special incentive for
the growers who have been negli
gent in tbe proper disposition of
refuse fruit to give prompt atten
tion to it. Dispose of all refuse
fruit from the sheds and orchards
by burying deep in a pit with
quicklime or thoroughly burning.
