A recent survey shows that there
are 795.000 coal miners in the
United States. Of these it is esti
mated that 185,000 are at work
and G10,000 are idle, on strike.
There are no strikers in Alabama
and Virginia. We,dare assert that
the strikers will soon regret, if
they do not now, that they follow

The statement by Attorney-
General Daugherty that the strikes
now on makes certainty a coal
famine this winter, is most serious.
It won lit appear that the govern
ment will be compelled to step in
It is inepnceivable that the
public, especially tho women and
children —to say nothingof the in
dustries—should bo subjected to
Inurt, deprivatiou and disaster
through contentions botweeu labor
and capital.
From the health and comfort
stand points the people of the
south would not so greatly suffer
from a coal famino. But such a
calamity would spread disaster,
even death, in tho North East and
West.
Government ownership, even
government temporary control of
the industrial activities, is not
*
relished by many. But it is to be
that, if that it must be. Govern
ment can not permit tho public
to suffer because two of its in
terests do not function.
