PEACH TREES ARE NOW READY FOR
SCALE SPRAY
'
The killing frosts and light
freezes of the past week have mat
ured the, wood and hardened the
past season’s growth of peach
trees. The sap has deoended, and
the defoliated branches and twigs
have changed from the greenish
red to the dark red color. This is
a good indication that the wood
is in condition for receiving the
caustic spray for scale, and peach
growers are advised to apply it as
soon as practicable. The spray can
now be used without danger of in
jury to the new wood of the past
season’s growth. It will be remem
bered that a considerable amount
of twig injury resulted a year ago
from applying the scale spray be
fore cold weather bad properly
hardened the wood.
There has been a marked in
crease in the San Jose infestation
on peach trees in most sections of
Cfcorgia during the past itwo years
and orchardists are urgently ad
vised/to make a special effort this
year to thoroughly apply the
spray, and to make the applica
lion immediately. A second ap
plication just before the buds
swell in the Spring should be
made to all trees that show a very
heavy infestation. One part of
liquid lime-sulphur testing 32 d?
grees to eigh t parts of water should
be used.
