THE CHRISTMAS TIME.
The annual coming of the Christ
mas season and spirit is evidenced
especially by tbe stores, the post-
offices and the express stations.
Next Monday. Christmas Day
will be here, and all our people, will
enjoy the good things pecn.lla to
that day.
Forty-four years ago, the writer
of this (article published the first
copy on the front page of which
was printed hid name as editor and
publisher.
Of course we expect that the
spirit of Christ may prevail to the
desired degree nex| Monday and
during all other days that follow.
Of course we all ex poet to have
a good time Christmas day, but
that phrase does not mean the
same to all who may hear or say.
Thero aro many who will devote
the saored day to the promotion of
selfish pleasure, or more. Others,
however, will beyond doubt be
better at the close of the day be
cause of tho way they used it.May
nono have cause to bo ashamed of
the way we use Christmas day.
.Of course there will bo Chris
tian services observed on tht; day
used to commemorate the birth of
Christ, Son of the Almighty Cod.
Thero should bo nothing done
during this date that could not
with propriety stand in the home
of the most devout and " faithful
Christian man or woman in the
world. /

This writer knows next, Monday
will lack much of being like tho
Christmas day wo know 44 years
ago, but we do not believe tho
1922 day will suffer much by the
comparison.
Of course the writer today does
not see things ns he saw them in
1878, nor does he see or hear the
people of the age with whom he
associated then. N
But comparisons aro obnoxious
and rarely do good. Christmas is
in the same class now as then, let
us make next Monday tho best we
say, in spirit and truth.

tho profits of the farm increase.
There is small pyofit in raising
crops on poor land; and much of
our Southern land, is poor largely
because it has been kept in culti

such small chance to regain the
fertility taken out of it b.y N the
crops removed, and wasted out .of
it by the faulty methods of culti

section, the growing of more gl az
ing crops—more grass and more
legumes-is a necessary part of,
the upbuilding of the soil to the
point of profitable production.
When the grass has covered the
fields and k the legumes are growing
there comes the need v of livestock
to consume them. As the soil calls
for the growing cover of green, so
the green growing cover on the
land calls for the docks ami herds
