Three Mon Rob Wealthy Woman' In
Fashionable Apartment House—'
Police Find “Chloroform
New York.—Frank Carman, an art
ist, was placed under arrest charged
with grand larceny in "having acted
in concert with two others not yet
apprehended" in the theft of one hun
dred and fifty thousand dollars In
jewels and cash from Mrs. Charles P.
Hugo Schoolkopf, wife of a wealthy
Buffalo broker, during a new year’s
party in Carman’s apartment on Fifth
avenue. «
* J. S. Hirsh, an insurance broker, to
whom Mr. Seboelltopf referred all in
quiries concerning the robbery, said
Mrs. Seboelltopf had recognized one of
her three assailants as, a man with
whom she played cards during the par
ty in Carman’s apartment.
Mrs. Shoelkopf came to New York
to spend the holidays and had rooms
at the Ritz Carlton. She had accepted
an invitation to celebrate the new year
at the home of a friend on West End
avenue. Carman, whom Hirsh said
the Schoelkopfs had known for sev
eral years, was to have been a guest’
at this party. When illness suddenly
developed in the family of the friend,
Carman is sa'id to have suggested that
the pstrty be given in his apartment.
The party consisted of five couples,
including Mrs. Schoelkopf and her host.
She arrived at the apartment on the
fifth floor shortly before ten o’clock.
About ten o’clock a man knocked at
the door and announced he was algpe
downstairs and had a bottle he would
like to share, according to Hirsh’s
version, presumed to have been told
him by Mrs. Schoelkopf. Invited to
join the Carman party, he disappeared,
returning with a bottle -of champagne
and even glasses.
At 12:45 a. m. the stronger left
the Carman apartments at once, say
ing he lived downstairs. Mrs. Schoel
kopf left next, saying she would wait
in the lobby downstairs for the others
to escort her to her hotel.
As ehe descended the staircase be
tween the fifth and fourth floors, she
saw a man standing in the hall before
a partly opened door, Hirsh relates.
The man sprang at her and pressed
a handkerchief saturated with chloro
form to her nose.
Two men rushed through the part
ly opened door and carried Mrs. Seblbel-
kopf into an apartment. She recalled
being beaten in the face, bound with
a rope and gagged, while two men strip
ped o,tt her jewels, as a third covered
her with a pistol.

< Planning For Melon Season
' Thomasville.—It seems a far cry to
watermelon time now, blit already plana
are being made by the well known
growers fdf* their crops the coming sea
son. The fact that the crops, as a
whole, was a faillure last year does not
seem to have deterred them from the
idea of planting again, in fact, it Is
sand that the acreage will be equally
bb large as ever. It is believed that
one cause of the failure of the crop
last year was defective seed and great
care will be exercised this year to
obtain the best seed that can be had.
