dissatisfaction with state depart
ments, and demanding repeal of the
equalization law before a substitute
can be found,” are dooming Geor

Probe of Alleged Illegal Contracts
Augusta.—A sensation has been
Bprung in Augusta following an an
nouncement by the realty board that
they have appointed a committee of
their number, with authority to em
ploy counsel and accountants, for the
purpose of Investigating reports that
the law is being violated In the matter
of the mayor and some members of
council being, or having been, inter
ested in contracts with the city. • Au
gusta’s municipal law, as well as state
law, specifically forbids this.
Aged Tifton Resident Given one Year
Tifton.—Judge Eve of the superior
court sentenced David Whiddon, US
years old, convicted of assault and
battery, after the jury ha<f"been out*
forty-seven hours on the charge of as
sault on an 11-year-old child, to one
year on the state -farm. Bond of $3,-
500 was made in new trial applica
tion. Whiddon was a member of one
of the most prominent families in the
county, and was a church member and
leader in moral uplift.
Death Ends Career Of Mattie Gale
Brunswick.—Miss Mattie Gale died
at her home on Norwich street re
cently. Miss Gale has been for more
than twenty-five years connected with
tho public schools of Brunswick, re
tiring about twenty years ago. Since
that time she has been conducting a
private school. She was loved and
respected by all, and there was
scarcely a boy or girl, a man or
woman in the city of Brunswick who
did not know "Miss Mattie.”

district agent, of Macon, and jMiss
Ctta Colelough, state agent, at Amer
icus, Crisp county, won first placei
Miss Ardie Puckett of Crisp ranked
highest. The other girls from Crisp
county were. Misses Jewell Jones and
Edna Hall.

One Man Is Seriously Injured When
Automblle Plunges To Creek
Bed Many Feet Below
Denver, Colo.—Sumner Curtis, of
Washington, representative of the Re
publican national committtee accom
panying President Harding’s party on
its western trip, Thomas French, of
Denver, and Thomas Dawson, Colo
rado historian and veteran Washing
ton newspaper man were killed and
another man was injured seriously
when the automobile in which they
were making a mountain tour plunged
off the road into Bear Creek Canyon,
twenty-five miles from Denver. The
injured man was Donald Craig, man
ager of the Washington bureau of the
New .York Herald.
Only a few members of the presi
dential party made the automobile
tour of the nearby mountain parks.
The invitation was extended by the
Denver newspaper men to the visit
ing correspondents, but was accepted
only by a few. The jyiajorlty remain
ing In the city to accompany the
president and Mrs. Harding on their
tour of the metropolitan district and
to the army general hospital.
An operation was performed imme-
ditely at tho county hospital in an
effort to save Mr. Craig’s life. His
scalp was severely lacerated and It
was feared he had sustained a fractur
ed skull and internal injuries.
' Mr. Dawson nuifured fractured ribs,
Injuries to his spine, a lacerated foot
and possible Internal Injuries accord
ing to physicians at tho hospital.
President Harding telephoned per
sonally to the hospital to learn the
conditions of the injured, as soon as
he received word of the accident.
The president expressed deep regret
over the tragedy.
The body of Curtis was taken to
the mountain home of C. C. Gates,
Denver rubber manufacturer. A brok
en steering gear caused the automo
bile to drop off a seventy-five foot
cliff at a treacherous curve and
plunge Into the rocky bed of Bear
Creek. French's body was brought to
Denver and the other two victims
were taken to a hospital here.
The four men were returning from
Lookout mountain, when they had
attended a luncheon extended by the
Denver PresB club. Curtis was dead
when other members of the party,
composed of correspondents accom
panying the Harding party and Den
ver newspaper men who followed In
other automobiles reached the wreck
ed machine.
