THE PHYSICIAN AND THE PREACHER
The lost arts are the regret of
the world. Before any nation
now in being was a nation, men
knew how to tnako edged tools of
copjper and glass as malleable as
modern gutta-percha. Such know!
edge was lost in the dark ages
But, happily for tho world, we
seem to be npon tlio point of re
gaining something better than the
forgotten material troasures.
It is only in eomparatlvoly mod
ern times that there has been a di
vorce between healing of the body
and tho healing of the soul. From
tho earliest records of human
thonghb and experience there was
complete twinship in the treat
ment of the diseased spiritual and
physical sides of man. Tho "sound
mind in the sound body” of tho
Romans was no more a new
thought thant ho present day“New
Thought 1 ’ or "Matriculature," or
any other name that may be chos
en to express tho thought that
was exemplified in every action
and teaching of Jobus Christ. 'J he
axiomatic truth is that no man
can be well in thought if ho is sick
in body. Healing must be dual
to bo worth a moments time and
toil.
Man from the beginning of time
has been a trader. Ho gives wil
lingly something for something.
But he will not give something
for nothing.
The doctor who does not preach
by his personality, as well as his
words, the gospel of sunlight,fresh
air, pure food and sanitation, is a
barnacle upon his profession. Tho
doctor so unimaginative that all
his thoqgbts are shaped by icy
formulae and proved material faots
has no right at any bedside, how
ever valuable might bo his work in
the laboratory of the chemist or
biologist.
And so we consider tbo black
garbed expounder of dole, gloom
damnation, and the pulpitter who
deals only with theology outside
the scope of "human nature’s dai
ly needs," unfit to bfc spiritual
counselors of the people.
It is because of these classes
that more men than over before in
the world’s^history are distrusting
medicine and tho profession; and
more ministers are asking, " Why
do so few people go to church?"
Dr. Worcester, of Boston answers
frankly by Baying, "They don’t go
because they feel that they are
not suffering much loss by staying
away."
The twe professions were once
one, and now as we come to realize
that man is net merely an animal
not yet a disembodied spirit, bnt
that soul and body are knit in a
mistic nnien, as we eomo to realize
this truth, the two greatest of
the professions mast again be
friends and allies; the doctor must
become more spiritual and the
clergyman more scientific.
The moremnet in this direction
already under way, will be aeeept-
•d as a long step toward that prac
tic&l Christianity which the Mas
ter preached sad practiced.—®x. j

WHY?
A citizen who maintained
pawnshop took out a fire insurance
policy, the same day a blaze broke
out that destroyed the building
and its contents.
The insurance company tried in
vain to find sufficient grounds to
refuse payment, and was obliged
to content itself with the follow
ing letter appended to the check.
"Dear Sir: Wo note that your
policy was issued at ten o’clock
on Thursday morning and that
the fire did not occur until three-
thirty. Why this unseemly delayl"
