No. 2 NINE HOUSTON OFFICERS ARE CHOSEN IN SPECIAL ELECTION Pierce Is Sheriff, Caller Is Clerk, Crowell Is Collector, Cooper Is Ordinary, J. P. Cooper And Tucker Are New Com missioners. In the special electioa of Jan nary 7th, nine Houston Oounty eflicers were chosen to replace those elected from the Peach Coun ty territory recently resigned. The 'contest, under new political con ditions in the county, proved most interesting especially in the races fer Sheriff, Clerk of the Court, Tax Collector aud Commissioners -which were hotly contested. Re sults of the sheriffs race remained in doubt until the last vote was counted, and proved to be the most remai kable race of the election as well as the closest not ed here in many years. C. C. Pierce wou for sheriff over his nearest contestant, J. R. Stripling by just 5 votes. Sheriff-elect?Carlton C. Pierce, known te his friends as "Bab" while mn experienced officer, hav* ing served as Deputy under sheriff T. S. ohapman, is said to be the youngest Sheriff in the state he be ing 26 years of age. The vote in the Sheriff's race was as follows c. C. Pierce 445, J. R. Stripling440, T. S. chapman 203 and W. I}. Watson 24. J. H. culle^ for twenty years Deputy clerk won for clerk of Su perior conr? over his closest oppon ent by 241 votes. S. P. crowell won aver his nearest opponent for Tax Collector by 104 votes. M. L. cooper was elected Ordi nary by au overwhelming majority. J. P. cooper and G. D. Tucker were elected county commissioners J. P. Duncan for Representativ and W. c. Watson for Tax Re ceiver were unopposed. Rhodes Sewell whose name was placed on the ticket late won for county surveyor without opposi tion. CIVITANS MEET AT H1LLGREST f> The Perry Civilans Club held their first meeting of the new year at the hotel Hillcrest on last Thursday ' Geuerai plans for the new year *ere outlined and reports from eommittees all ready at work were heard. Among the items of loeal im provement for which the club is striving at present is the exten sion of Telegraph Service in Perry whioh is badly needed in view of the growth of business here. Another thing for which they strive is the improvement of the appearance of Carroll Street by the removal of unsightly awnings. The advertising of Houston County and her resources is the plan of the club for the year and plans are now being made to launch a campaign along that line. MISS DELIA RAGIN DEAD Miss Delia Ragin died at her home in Perry last Thursday after noon at 5:30 o'clock after an ill ness oi several - months. Funeral services wer* vendue ted at the home by Rev. vv. Kl Dfennls of the Perry Methodist church, and burial was in ?the family lot at Evergreen cemetery Friday after noon at 3 o'clock. flvtigs Ragln was a member of one of the best known pioneer families of this county, being a . younger daughter of the late Col. John Ra gin who settled here in the early fifties. She was born in Perry and spent her life here. Though in practical retirement during recent years on account of her ill health, in her younger days she was prominently identified with the church and social life of the community and was a musician of unusual talent. She was a con scientious member of the Metho dist church. Her gentle disposi tion endeared her to all who knew her and she was loved best by those who knew her best. Of her nearest relatives she is survived by one sister and one brother Mjss Mamie Ragin and Mr. Ed Ragin of Perry and one niece and one nephew Miss Mary Giles and Mr. Sam Giles of Atlan ta. ELKO NEWS Mrs. Lawton W. Houser lias re turned home from a delight'ul visit with ber sister Miss Delia Smith of Locust Grove. Mr aud Mrs. Aosom S. Jones and children of Macon spent the Christinas holidays with her parents Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Buff. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Grace and children spent Monday in Wells ton with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Miller. Mr. Charles Grace Marshall has returned to continue his studies at Bmory College. Mr. and Mrs D. J. Harrell of Villa Rica speut Christmas with their daughter Mrs. J. H. Clark. Miss Doris Edwards, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Grace is at home for the holidays. Mrs. IJattic I,on Marshbnrn of Villa Kiea is visiting her sinter Mrs. J. H. Clark. The friends of Mr. J. F. Ther? are muttprinpg an?J growling* for long afterward. * FIRST SESSION HOUSTON SUPERIOR COURT JANUARY 12TH January And July Term Added To Re place City Court The January Term of Houstou Superior Court will convene next Monday Jauuary 12. This is tho first term of the court under tho new law wbereby the City Court' is aboudoned and two additional, terms of Superior Court are to be held. In the future all court business of the county will be transacted by tho Superior Court except minor cases weich may be brought before the Justices of Peace. The four Terms of the Superior Court will convene as follows. Second Monday in January, First Monday in April second Monday in July and first Monday in Oc tober. . Traverse and Tales .
