ANDERSON PASSES AWAY Death Comes Wednesday Morning After Prolonged Illness. A. M. Anderson, beloved eitizeo of Houston County, died at his home in Perry early Wednesday morning after a prolonged illness, Though not unexpected, as he had been critically ill for a week, his death brings deep sorrow to a host of friends throughout this county aud section. Mr- Auderson was prominently identified with the political, busi ness, and civic affairs of tbe Coun ty and the City of Perry. He had been foi tbe past fourteen years Treasurer of Houston County. He was a member of the City Council, a prominent Mason, and a charter member of the Civitaa Club. For several years he has been the Ford automobile dealer here. His personality made for him a succcss of this business. He was to a high degree public spirited, and very generous in his contributions for iha betterment of his town and community. He was a conscientious member of the Methodist church ? a good man holding the esteem of all who knew him, and the genuine love of those who knew him best; because of his own gentle and lovable na ture. The passing of Milledge Anderson is indeed a loss of no small magnitude to this com munity. Funeral services were held this morning (Thursday) at 11 o'clock at hi? home. Rev, W- K* Dennis, Methodist pastor officiated, and in his remarks paid high tribute to Mr. Anderson, saying that he had never heard anyone speak au?ht of him. The pretence of numerous friends from almost every section of Houston and Peaeh counties and the many beautiful and ex quisite floral offerings attested the esteem in which this noble citizen was held. Following the funeral service, burial with Masonic rites was at Fort Valley, where Mr. Anderson lived before coming to Perry. He is survived by his wife and one son, Philip, and one daughter, Milledge, of Perry, his mother. Mrs. George Anderson, of Myrtle, two brothers, George and David Anderson, of Mrtle, and two sis* tera, Miss Bessie Anderson and Mrs. Bledsoe, of Fort Valley. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of many friends in this town and county and in their grief they share. HEAVY RAINS WASH OUT ROADS AND BRIDGES TJbio heavy rains of tho past week and the down-pour of Satur day night and Sunday resulted in considerable damage to roads and bridges in Houston county. Nearly every one of the smaller bridges being impassable with water flowing beyond their abut ments Sunday and Sunday night. The bridge over Baskin Branch on the Dixie Highway was wash ed out and a newly made fill south of Haynesville was washed out. Great holes were washed in the roads in many sections of the county it is reported. Repairs are being made however and tho Dixie an 1 National Highways are now passable in all directions. HOUSTON'S NEW OFFICERS BEGIN THEIR TERMS Sheriff Carlton Pierce Appoints A. B. Murray As Deputy * Nine Houston County officers, elected ou January 7th, have re ceived their commissions from the Governor and have been admin istered their oaths to serve the County for the next four years. The commissions are dated Jan uary l3tu, and some of the new officers were swam on that date while others did not receive their commission until the 14th, there beiug some delay in receiving their bonds from the bonding companies. Judge Malcolm 1). Jones of the Superior Court administered the oath to Ordinary M. L. Cooper who in turn swore in the other officers.' The new officers are Carlton C. Pierce, Sheriff succeeding T. S. Chapman; J. H. Culler. Clerk of the Superior Court, succeeding H. L. Wasdeu; M. L.Cooper, succeed ing Emmett Uouser tesigued; S. P. Crowell Tax Collector, succeed ing T. E. Tharpo resigned; W. C. Watson Tax i&eceiver succeeding, 0. N. Rouutree resigned; J. P. Cooper and Q. D. Tucker the two additional members of the board of County Commissioners; Rhodes Sewell County Surveyor, succeed ing (Jhas Vance resigned. Sheriff Carlton Pierce announc ed Tuesday the appointment of A. B. Murray as Deputy Sheriff. It is understood that both Sheriff Pierce and Deputy Murray will at once move into the jailors apart ments in the new County jail in order to be in more convenient touch with the business of the office. RETIRES FROM MERCANTILE BUSINESS The numerous friends of Mr. H. T. Gilbert will learn with interest that he is to dispose of his stock of merchandise and retire from the mercantile business here to take np other lines. The announcement comes as a surprise and will cause regret among business friends and cus tomers with whom he has so long bee* pleasantly associated. Mr Gilbert in point of service in the dry goods and clothing lines prebably stand first among the mer chants of Perry, he having been eogaged in this line of business here for thirty-six years. ? For the past eighteen years he has operated one of the leading establishment here enjoying the confidence and esteem as well as I the liberal patronage of the people 'of the community. 1 Friends regret that he is to |discontinue his business here but wish for him contiuued suc cess in whatever new venture he may undertake. PERRY LOAN & SAVINGS BANK ELECTS OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS At the regular annual meeting of Stockholders of the Perry Loan & Savings Bank held on January ^Tth, 1D25 seven directors WHre elected, viz.: (J. R. Mann, A. A. ISmoak, J. P. Duncan, T. C. Rogers, R. L. Cater, L. F. Cater, and \frs. Bessie H. Nnnn. The Board of Directors organi/,-1 ed by electing for 1925 R. L. Cater, President; L. F. Cater. Vice President; and C. K. Andrew, i Cashier. A. 10 per cent dividend was paid by the bank on January 1st, 1015. SUPERIOR COURT IN SESSION The newly inaugurated January ! Term of Houston Superior Court is in session here this week with Judge.Malcolm D. Jones presiding | and solicitor General Clias- H. Garrett acting for the state. | Due to the bad condition ef the roads some jurors and others were late aud (he court was delayed iu opening Monday Morning. | This being au eutirely new ses sion of the Superior Court and the first since the creation of the new county the time of the court on Monday was largely consumed in taking over the business of the j City Court and the dividing of the venue between Houston and the new County of Peach. Three divorce cases and several ! cases in default were disposed of on Monday and Tuesday. After a bried charge by the Judge the Grand Jury organized Monday morning with L.K. Cater, Foreman, M. G. Edwards, Clerk, and VV. J. Short, Bailiff. Up to Tuesday afternoon 18 true bill had beeu returned. The court will continue probably through Thursday there being a number of important Civil cases still on the docket. The criminal docket willbe taken up next Monday. FIVE ARRESTED IN PERRY FOR THEFT - IN MACON Four men and a lG-year old youth aro in Bibb County jail charged with a misdemeanor iu oonnection with a dayligt robbery of the Standard Oil Company's filling station, at the intersection of Second Street and Houston Ave nue in Macon 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The sheriff of this county were notified to be on the look-out for the men and boy and they were arrested in Perry early Thursday night by sheriff T. S. Chapman as they arrived in an automobile soon after the robbery. They are C- F. Marrett and his son. George Marrett, Ernest Allen, Wallis Berry, and J. E. McMongle. The younger Marrett is specifical ly accused of rifling the cash draw er at the filling station while .J. R. Echols, the manager, was filling an order for the four men. Twenty dollars in currency is alleged to have been taken. Tli3 Bibb office was notified of the arrests Friday morning and I Bill Branan. deputy sheriff, wasl sent for the men.
