Uraivt Sordid Sketch of London Slum Life About 'ne o'clock the miserable little tilth shops of London, which punctual?' thf obscure facades of the long tenement rows like big lamps, ar? crowded with women and children carrying dishes und baskets, writes AJfcn* l'aquet in the Frankfurter Zelt ung. Even as late as t?n o'clock children play on the pavements and weary, dowdy women Hit on the steps of their tiny unllglitcd houses, whose windows glint vacant and dusty into the dark ness. Women also gHther In clusters on the street corners. Silhouettes of men at and out in front of brightly lighted soup and baked potato cara vans. randy stores and fruit shops are still open. In the middle of a row of darkened ahow windows electric lights shine brightly on the varnished coffin of an undertaking parlor. All these r:ttle details stand out sharp and ruth an they do in China. Until eleven o'clock the eorner pub? are packed with humanity. Each has three or more entrances leading to a little narrow room separated from the private hur by a light partition extend ing from Die wall to the counter. The bartender with his barmaids presides in the middle of this horseshoe coun ter, directing things In a fog of to bacco smoke and whisky fumes. Men stand as closely together on the sawdust-covered tloor as their half drained glasses on the wet, narrow ledge In front of them. Dirty hands empty again and again the pot of highly salted shrimps beside the" door. Yard Distance From Roycd Nose to Thumb More than eight hundred years ago there lived a king?an English king, one Henry, surnamed Iieauclerc, Alex ander McAdle relates In the Atlantic Monthly. Early In his reign gray bearded councilors declared that In their opinion it would be nice to have a measure of length called a yard; and this should be the distance be tween the tip of royal Henry's nose and the end of the royal thumb. The king's nose may have been large or small or tilted upward. More over, the distance may have been measured when the king's nose was swollen, for royal noses can hit a doorpost in the dark Just like common noaes. And the royal thumb may have been stubby or spatulate. Henry, too, might have playfully extended his fingers and wiggled them with his thumb not quite at, but very near, the end of his royal nose; or he might have wiggled eight fingers with the thumb of one hand touching the lit tle linger of the other. Twirling his fingers thus he could delicately con vey to the court scientists who were conducting the royul trlangulation just what he thought of them. But at all costs the deed wns done and the Englishmen of the Twelfth cen tury achieved a yard. Dog Carried Danger Signal A motorist who was driving through a small town In Canada one night was astonished to see a little red light dancing about close to the ground on the road ahead. As he drew nearer he saw that It was an electric hulb fed from n dry-cell battery fustened on the back of a little dog. The own er, it woman who was walking nearby, explained that the dog refused to stay ofT the streets at night, and that to keep him from being run over she hod contrived the canine tall light, so to speak. No doubt the dog will soon become familiar with the rules of the road?will slow down and bnrk at all crossings, keep always on the proper side of the highway and never go more than *10 miles an hour except when he sees a cat ahead.?Youth's Companion. Stara in Southern Cross The Southern cross Is not a phe nomenon. It Is the popular name for a Southern constellation situated near the Antarctic circle, and therefore never visible In northern latitudes. It consists of four bright stars, to which fancy, aided by Christian as' soclatlons, gives the cruciform shape. Two brilliant stars, which mark the summit and foot of the Southern cross, have nearly the same right as cension. The constellation, there fore, is almost vertical when passing the meridian, and these two stars act as pointers to the Antarctic pole Early Monopoly Monopoly in America began In 1C23. declares Edward MacMahon, as sociate professor of history in the University of Washington. Almost without knowing It, al most In spite of yourself, you do Just that You take what you have: lore, of course, if you sre one of the lucky ones who have It, or friendship?any thing that means happiness to you. Sometimes the fuel that comes to your hand Is the Joy you have In your own oilnd, Ln learning and thinking, In books and plays and music. Sometimes it's religion. Most people, after they're ; older, keep It burning with work, , hard, clean work and the little things i that make it crackle?Jokes and non sense and bits of singing and laugh ing. Now and then, of course, you pile It With the driftwood of your am bitions, and your dreams shoot up and ap. It's a Ore that costs you some thing, happiness; but you keep It go ing, as you keep life going. New Light on Newton*9 Discovery of Gravity Izaak Walton, the compleat angler, ihould not be confused with Sir Isaac Newton, the discoverer of the Isw of jravity. Perhaps this little story, which has never been told on them before, will keep them separate lu the aaind of the student. Those two gentlemen were sitting ?n a river bank one day?Izaak fish ing and Sir Issac watching him. Sud denly an apple fell from an overhang ing tree upon the head of the-latter, svoklng a sound which posterity Is aware was far from hollow. After tome language which virtually spoiled the fishing, Newton remarked to his companion: "It has Just struck me that It Is very curious that apples do not fall upward. Why do you suppose that Is not 8o7" "For the same reason," laughed Walton raucously, "that the fish bites the worm and the worm doesn't bite the fish." Thus at one and the same time New ton demonstrated becoming gravity ?nd Walton unseemly levity.?"F. D.,M in Kansas City Star. History Told by Coin* Romun coins illustrate the religion, the architecture, the games and sports, historic events and, In a striking man ner. the advent of Christianity. The early Constantlne coins disclose the classic heathen gods; after his con version the coins bear the symbol of the cross. The diversity of this coin Informa tion was enhanced by the practice of sending the mint master along with Roman armies. Soldiers were paid In the Held with money minted In the Held, often from locally mined metals. In England's civil war Charles 1. dur ing his refuge In castles and forts, struck off coins to pay h!s troops and ;lcfrav his personal expenses. These nre the "siege-pieces" referred to by collectors of English coins. All Accounted For The clergyman's daughter was a cood, sweet soul. She was so Inter ested In all the parishioners and loved to know that they were comfortable and had all they wanted. More than one Ill-natured person had boon heard to call It noslness, but no matter. One mornlns she met little Tommy Guntcr on his way home with a basket of groceries. "Well, Tommy," she said, stopping and smiling at the little fellow, "and how are yon all getting on?" "Nicely, thank you, raLss," answered Tommy, touching his cap respectfully, "mother, she's got rheumatism, I've got a boil and father's got a moqth In Jail."?London Tit-Bit*. Italian Lazzaroni The name "Lazzaroni" was given to n class of vagabonds In Naples, Italy, which. In the Seventeenth and Eight eenth centuries, formed a distinct caste. They annually elected a chief, called Capo Lazzaro, who was recog nized by the authorities and frequent ly took on active part in political af fairs. In 1047, headed by Masanlello, they overthrew the government and for a few days held possession of the city. In 1798, instigated by Cardinal Uuffo, and led by Michel? Sforza, they successfully resisted the attacks of the Freach. The Lazzaroni had no homes nor regular occupations. They wore ragged clothea, were filthy In their habits, and slept In the open air. They were so-called either from Lazarus, the befgar, or more prob ably from the hospital of St Lasarus, which served aa a place ef refuge for the destitute of the dty.?Kansas City Bur.
