Ways and means of improving the Central Dixie route were dis cussed aud plaus outlined to in crease tourist traffic to Florida over this route. Resolutions were passed asking the co-operation of County Com missioners in each county and the Highway department in maintain ing the road in good oondition G. W. Darden, Engineer of the State Highway department spoke of the work the department was doing to build aad maintain the Highways in this district and of som* of the difficulty experienced as a result of the distruetive rains. He paid a high compliment to the Commissioners of Houston County whose co operation was "100 per OJnt' he said. Keports showed that the Central Dixie Highway is now in good condition from Macon to Jackson ville. The lower part, once bad is now in excellent condition. One of the few bad places to be found is a fill between Hayneville and Hawkinsvilie which has not yet been perinantly repaired since the recent destructive rains. KeprepeHtatives from Houston County and Perry explained their attitude toward the Central Dixie assuring those present that no local prejudice existed against the Dixie route, that they were heart ly in favor of keeping this route in such a good condition as that it would deserve and receive a full share of tourist traflic. J. V. Cooper, Houston County Com missioner pledged co-operation to this end. Others from Houston who made short talks were W. -E. Swanson, G, C. Nunn and G. W. Smith, At the meeting reporters were appointed in each county who will report the condition of the High j way in their territory, from which bulletins will published and dis tributed in towns along the route showing the condition of the Dixie Highway each week. PEACHES NOW READY FOR FIRST TREATMENT Hileys are now ready for the first application of spray or dust, and peach growers in Middle Geor gia are advised to start spraying this variety immediately with 4 pounds of powdered arsenate of lead to 200 gallons of water plus the milk of lime from 12 pounds of uuslakcd lime or 16 pounds of hydraled lime. If dust is used in stead of the liquid the 0-595 formulais recommeuded, however, the 80-5-15 may be uted if the grower desires. Eibertas will be ready for the first application by next Monday Maftih 23, and they should be treated at that time with the above materials. Upon the completion of the Eibertas the other varieties should receive the first treatment in the following order: Georgia Belles, Uneedas, Carmen, Early Rose, and other early varieties. The development of the fruit of each variety should be watched closely in order that the first spray or dust can be applied when about three-fourths of the petals or pink part of the flower have fallen. The warm weather of last week caused many adult cnrcuJios to leave their hibernation quarters Our hibernation experiments show that by the latter part of last week many curculios had left Bermuda grass and pin? ncetlle hibernating quarters, and they had started to leave from dried forest foliage, etc. If arsenate of lead is used when the petals aro falling it will be possible to kill many of these beetles as they feed on the peach calyces immediately upon appearing from hibernation, and before they deposit any eggs. Crop prospects are good, and a special effort should be made to finish a high quality crop this year by spraying or dusting thoroughly with the recommended materials at the right time.
