SAVANNAH is deservedly fa
mous for its genuine Southern
hospitality ami the fact was well
illustrated by the mauner in which
the Savannah Newspapers and the
American Legion entertained the
Georgia Editors just before their
voyage to New York on April 25.
Incidentally Savannah is alive to
her possibilities as a great port
city and is justly proud of her
many attractions. Her civic
bodies are solidly behind the high
way project which will conueet
Savannah and Jacksonville with a
paved road, this heiuir a part of a
proposed highway extending along
the Atlantic coast from New Eng
land to Florida.
THE STEAMSHIP City of Chat
tanooga of the Ocean Steamship
Lines, on which the Georgia Edi
tors sailed to New York, is one of
the most modern coast-wise ves
sels on the Atlantic coast and
with its sister ship, City of Bir
mingham, the largest and finest of
tha Ocean Steamship Meet plying
between Savannah and New York
and Boston.
THE Ocean Steamship Com
pany is a part of one of the largest
transportation systems in the
United States and an important
factor in the development of trade
and industry in Georgia and the
Southeast.
THE personality and genius of
the directing head of a corporation
is rellected in its operation and
this fact was demonstrated to the
undying credit of Mr. L. A. Downs
President of the Ocean Steamship
Company,and J D. McCartney bis
able and gonial assistant and Mr.
G. 11. Angevine General Passenger
agent who accompanied the
Editors ou their cruise and were
hosts in a very personal way to
the members of the party. Ship
officiers from Captain Hammond
down to sailors demonstrated the
polioy of ellicieucy afld courtesy
m their attitude toward their
passengers whom they regard as
their guests.
NEW YORK gave the Georgia
Editors a happy welcome through
the Georgia society and other
organizations who find common
interest with Georgia Newspaper
men. The Georgians were extend
ed courtesies at the Waldorf
Astoria Hotel where tliey made
their headquarters, and the party
was guests at dinners, luncheon,
and various sight seeing trips and
entertaimneuts.
It goes without saying that the
trip wok most enjoyable as well
as enlightening to the Georgian
who had never seen New York
under such favorable auspices. The
Georgians also took advantage of
the opportunity to put over some
favorable advertising for the grand
old state of Georgia.
NEW YOKKER8 honor the
memory of Henry W. Gray for
bis attitude of reconciliation be
tween the North and South and
regard him as Georgia's greatest
?ditor aud statesman and the
Soutb's greatest benefactor of his
time.
GEORGIANS found many New
Yorkers illy informed m to her
people, her social conditions, her
resource*, her climate, and they
realize the need of constructive
advertising among the teeming
millions of the North who might
find happier conditions in Geoi
*ia did they know of her many
opportunities.
