Old Ram Discovered
Youth Will Be Served
Not long ago the Companion print
ed a story by Mr. O. A. Stephens en
titled "Cepltus Tyrannus." The story
reminded a reuder of un experience
that u cousin of his hud with u rum
that must certulnlly have heen un off
spring of old Cephas. The rain was
past middle age, was large and heavy
and hud u wicked set of horns that
he used at every opportunity. lie be
caine so dangerous that he flnully had
to be contined by himself In a small
enclosure. .
My cousin, writes ovr correspond
ent, hud obtained a younger und
smaller ram for breeding purposes,
and the sight of the newcomer tilled
the old ram with deepest hut red. He
was never able to get at h!>n, though
he often put the enclosure to a severe
test when the young rum would come
in sight.
The end of the Jeulousy came sud
denly one duy when the gate of his
pen was Inadvertently left open. The
old ram gave one nngry blut and tore
through the opening, making for his
enemy, who was feeding with the
ewes about 200 yards away. At the
snort of defiance the entire herd
looked up, and the ewes took to their
heels. Not so their new lord, how
ever. He stood his ground, braced
ull four feet and lowered his head to
meet the oncoming rush. As the two
collided there was a crash that was
heard In the next Held. The impact
threw the old ram clear over the
youngster's back, and like Cepbns,
when he Innded some five feet to the
rear, lie lay quite still. Examination
showed that his neck was broken.
The young ruin appeared dazed for a
moment or two; then he leisurely trot
led off to Join the ewes at their new
feeding place.?Youth's Companion.
Musk Ox Well Equipped
to Cope yVith Enemies
The musk ox which makes its home
La the northern p>>rt of Canada Is a
connecting link between wild cattle
and sheep. Its horns are similar to the
cape buffalo and Its tlesh tastes like
beef. It has next Its body a dense coat
of soft, clean woolly hair, and through
this grows a iniln coat of very long,
straight brown hair like that of the
Tibetan yak, says the Winnipeg Free
Cress.
It has a tall so short and small that
thy animal sec-ins tailless. Their horns
meet in a broad base over the top of
the skull, drop far down, then sharply
curve upward for several inches, ter
minating in sharp points. They are
specially designed for puncturing the
vitals of wolves and polar bears. The
musk ox Uvea and thrives even up to
the furthest north for hoofed animals.
Pretty Legend of Cronsea
Near the place where the Blue
Itidge and the Allegheny mountains |
unite there is, in Patrick county, Va.,
a spur of the Blue Uldge called "Bull
mountain." On the side of this moun
tain, and nowhere else In the world,
there are found the famous "fairy
stones." The mountaineers explain it
by legends worthy of the myth-making
Greeks. One story says "that ages
ago, when the red men were masters
here, these stones were showered down
by the Great Spirit as a sign of salva
tion coming to the savage race." Hut
the generally accepted legend?that
one from which the name comes? Is
this: "When Christ was crucified on
Calvary elfin messengers carried the
news to all pacts of the world. When ;
the tidings of woe reached the fairies j
In the rugged mountains they ceased
their merrymaking and at once began
to make these crosses as mementos of
the sad event."
Beautiful in Ruin Is
Famous Dryburgh Abbey
A beautiful ancient church, like a
fine old painting or poem, has a mes
sage for people of the present day.
It Is as if the builders challenged the
modern world lc this wise: "Here Is
our Ideal of beauty; It breathes the
life of our time and marks a step in
our progress. I>o you moderns sur
pass us in such expressions of
beauty?"
The abbey of Dryburgh lies in Ber
wickshire, Just across the border not
far from Abbotsford and Melrose ab
bey, says the Christian Science Mon
itor. There Is a question whether It
was founded by David I In 1150, or by
Hugh de Morvllle. Probably both men
did much for It. The abbey today Is
lurrounded by orchards and noble
trees and crowns a peninsula around
which sweeps the Tweed river. Two
cables are still entire, and In the west
one If a beautifully radiated circular
window, called the wheel of Jit. Cath
erine. The general architecture of the
abbey shows Roman, Saxon, Norman
and Gothic lnflueacea. We associate
the spot principally with Sir Walter
Scott, but Thompson composed his
"Winter" here, and long before that
Gower, the friend of Chaucer, occupied
a cell In Dryburgh abbey. Chaucer
hitivelf stayed sotna time here wltli
