RAIL OFFICIALS VISIT
BIG CEMENT PLANT
SOUTHERN PLANS MANY IMPROVE
MENTS TO HANDLE FREIGHT.
Southern Railway officials from
the general manager of lines. West
down to the smaller officials, visit
ed the big plant of the Clinchfield
Cement Corporation in Houston
Couuty Monday and raide plaus
for putting in extonsive additional
improvements to handle the great
volutnn of freight that will soon
iiiqvc from that plant.
There will bs additional facili
ties to handle the business of the
corporation, it was announced
Monday night by J. W, Cutler,
division freight agent for the
Southern Railway,
Beginning July 1st, this plant
will manufacture and ship three
thousand barrels of cement a day
aud will use from five to six car
loads of coal every day. so there
will be considerable new business
over the lines of the Southern
Railway.
Most of the shipments will be
to Southern points, it is under
stood, for large contracts for early
deliveries have been made it was
stated.
W. T. Wright has been appoint
ed agent at Clinclilield for the
Southern Railway. In connection
with the agency there will be
telegraph service. The depot from
Tivola has been moved to this
point.

Among the delightful social
events of last week was the barbe
cue with which the Civitan Club
eutertaiued last Thursday atHous
tou Lake.
The guests motored out at six
o'clock and enjoyed a swim in the
lake.
..After the swim the guests as
sembled near the pool and an old
fashioned barbecue with all the
good things that go with it was
served.
Following supper, Civitan Harry
Kendall of Macon gave several
short readings. Speeches were
! made by guests from Macon, Ogle
thorpe, Montezuma, Fort Valloy,
and Perry. Johnny Jones of the
Fort Valley Leader Tribune said
that the occasion was worthy of
any place. It showed the spirit of
the people of Perry when they
asked the surrounding community
to join them in a love feast,
(Juests included members of the
Civitan Club of Maeon, of the
Kiwanis Clubs of Macon, Monte
zuma, Fort Valley, and Oglethorpe
and guests from Perry. Each
civitan had tno privilege of invit
ing two guests.

110 CARS PEACHES
SHIPPED FROM PERRY
With the season just now well
under way 110 cars of peaches had
been shipped from Perry up to
Thursday morning.
The shipment of Hileys is about
half finished and the packing
houses here are busy with that
variety. Only a very few Carmens
have been shipped from Perry this
season. Prices have benn satis
factory, ranging from $2.00 to
$4.00 per crate.
ALTON TREADWELL DEAD
Alton Treadwell, sixteen years
old son of Mr. and Mrs. .J, S.
Tread well, died at their home near
Perry early last Sunday morning
after a short illness. iJoatli is *aid

month ago.

UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO PAY STATISTIC
REGISTRARS OUT OF COUNTY FUNDS

trars was held unconstitutional
in an opinion handed down by the
Georgia Supreme Court.
| The sourt held that, under the
constitution of Georgia counties
are not authorized to use tax
moneys for any other puposo than
schools, to repair publie buildings
support prisoners, pay jurors,con
duct comts, build and maintain
I roads and support paupers, and
i that the legislature does not have
' the power to delegate this power
?to the counties.
The case was brought by one of
the commissioners of Houston
county, seeking a mandamus
against payment of registrars out
of county funds. The Supreme
court reversed the lower tribunal,
which had refused to sustain a
demurrer brought by* the defen
