IMPORTANT SCHOOL NOTICE
For the last few years promo
tions in the high school have beea
by subjects rather than by grades;
that is, the pupil bas been
permitted to advance in whatever
subject he or she passed up and
required to take again the subjects
failed in, rather than having to
repeat the whole grade. The sub
ject method, 1 am convinced is the
better of the two, if there were
enough teachers and courses .in
the high school to carry it out
successfully. But under existyig
circumstances, we are having to
return to the method used several
years ago?that of promoting by
grades. So, if a high school pu
pil fails in two subject? the whole
grade will hare to be repeated.
This is the same method nsed in
the grammar school. There is
this difference: All pupils failing
iu oue subject in the grammar
school will have to get this condi
tion off during the summer under
some teacher employed in the lo
cal schools or under some teacher
approved by the Superintendent.
If this condition is not removed
before the opening of school in
September the pupil will ?bave to
remain in same grade. In the
high school a pupil may advance
to next grade with one condition,
providing this subject is repeated
during the school" year.
No credit will be given tb high
school students for york gotten
off under any other teacher than
those employed in local high
school, unless an examination is
given to such students by said
high suhool teachers. Of course
credit in grammar school and
high school will be given for work
?otten off iu good s u m m e r
schools.
If a student lias failed in two or
more subjects either in grammar
school or high school I think it,
unwise even to attempt getting
them off during the summer, and
only by permission of the Super
intendent, in consultation with
t he teachers of (he subjects failed
in, will the attempt bo allowed.
Hardly can a pupil do in two or
even three months what they have
failed to do in nine months. It is
much better to repeat the grade
than to advance and probably not
have t he proper foundation. A
repetition of a grade under these
circumstances almost invariably
It ippens sooner or later. It is my
opinion that ii is always wise to
make the child repeat whole grade
whenever the failures first occur.
In the long run it is economy of
time, and is certainly economy in
education. J. M.Gooden,
Supt.
PEELING FRUIT WITH LYE
The process of removing' skins
from peaches, plums, pears, and
oilier I li i o-ski n lied fmit for can
ning, by dipping lAiem in a lye
solution is simple, saves lime,
(rouble, and a large portion of I he
fruit. Ilaud-poeling i-s not only
wasteful and tiresome, but the
the most valuable part of (h" fruit
nexl to the skin is thrown away.
To remove tlio skins of peaches,
plums, ami pouts put two gallois
of water in a large iron pot or
kettle (do not use aluminum) and
bring to i boil. Add one e ;n of
lye and stir with iron ladle or
stick until thoroughly dissolved.
Place .vour fruit in a wiie basket
or a thin cloth and lower it into
the boiling solution. Allow it to
remain for 20 to ->0 seconds. lie
move the fruit <|uickly and im
merse in cold water. Then wa-di
peelings from fruit.
It is best to first tost this so
lution with a few peaches nr peats
before going ahead. For very ripe
fruit, 20 seconds in the solution in
sufficient. For slightly green fruit.
.'50 t > 40 seconds or longer, < r a
stronger solution may be used if
necessary,
This process has been referred
to the board of food an.I drug ir
spectioti, which reports that it will
have no bad effects on the quality
of the fruit and is not contrary to
the requirement? of the Food and
Drug Act, and i? therefore health
ful.
Lye peeled fruit should be can
ned at once to avoid darkening.?
