CAR THIEVES ARRESTED AFTER
CHASE
Car Stolen In Perry And Two Others
"Swapped" Are Recovered.
Two young men, giving then
names as Gordon and claiming to
be brothers, were arrested at Vien
na Tuesday, charged with stealiug
a Buick automobile belonging to
S.L.Norwood.Jr at Perry. The car
was found also at Vienna Tuesday
morning.
Tbe arrest of the men and the
recovery of the car followed some
rather nuusul happenings and an
exciting chase in the night.
About 8:30 Monday night a Bu
ick sedan, contaiug two men, was
feon parked on the Court House
Scruarj a few feet from where S3
L. Norwood's car was standing,Mr.
Norwo >d being in the Court House
at the time. Twenty minutes later
he received a message saying his
car had just been seen at the fill
ing station at Toomer's old mill.
Mr. Frances Berry and two others
who wore at tho filling station at
the time, recoguized the car aud
becoming suspicious of tbe stories
told by the men in the oar (the
men claimed to be nephews of S.
L. Norwood Jr.) phoned into Per
ry to give the alarm.
Officers at various towns south
of Perry were notified and a party
from Perry started on the chase.
The gtolen car passed through
Vienna at high speed and received
a light load of shot from Sheriff
Vinson's gun in a vain effort to
stop the thieves. The chase con
tinued through the night, but>
somehow the car eluded the chasers
although preparations had been
made at several places to stop the
car, (particularly at Ashborn
where half-dozen cars drawn across
the road, and several deputies with
guns awaited its reception.)
The oar was found early Tues
day morning at tho outskirts of
Vienna and later the two men
were fonnd at a Vionna hotel and
arrested on suspicion.
The men were brought to Perry
by sheriff Pierce and locked up.
They have been postivoly identi
fied by three men who took
particular note of them when they

Judge H. A. Mathews, in tho
Houston County Superior Court
at Perry last. Saturday, re-sentenc

ville. The date of the execution
will be December 23.
Howell is tho convicted slayer
I of Harry Greene, Bibb County
deputy sheriff. The fatal shontinp?
j occurred on May 16, 1925, follow
ing a chase through the streets
;of Macon, in which numerous
|shots were fired into the rum run
ner's car. Greene was lured in the
swamps where he was shot to death.
Immediately following Judge
Mathews' decision W. A. McClel
lan and Walter Defore, both of
Macon, attorneys for the defense,
said tlioy would take the ease to
the Georgia Supreme Court on a
bill of receptions.
[ This will be the third time that
the Howell case has been in tho
Georgia Supreme Court, it being
[taken there after the trial in June
1925. and again on a motion for
rehearing'? Howell has also been
denied clemency by the Governor
and the Prison Commission.
Charles H. Garrett, solicitor
general of the Macon circnit. and
J. Ellworth Hall, represented the
State in the hearing.
The hearing lasted from 12:30 to
4:50 p. m. A short recess was tak
en for dinner.
One of tho points made by the
defense counsel was that it was
unconstitutional to resentence a
prisoner without him present, as
had been done with Howell in
September.
To cireumvent this point Howell
was brought to Perry, where ho
was tried last June, to liavo
sentence again passed on him.

mm. CHRISTIAN
WELCOMED AS PASTOR
OF METHODIST GHORGH
Blakely Presents Mr. Christian With Lov
ing Cup At Farewell Service.
A capacity auuiencc welcomed
Rev. T. M. Christian to the pasto
rate of the Mulhodist Church nt a
union service of all tho churches
at tho Methodist Church Sunday
evening. A large number o i
Methodist occupied the pews at
the morning service to welcome
their new pastor.
Both congregations were highly
pleased with Mr. Christian as a
man ant! as a preacher.
Rev. Mr. Christian coincs to
Perry from the Blakely Methodist
Church. 1 he article below copied
from Early County news will show
tho love that the Blakely Church
had for him, and how much thej'
were loathe to give him up.
Only one preaching service was
hold in Blakely last Sunday night?
all the congregations uniting in a
farewell service at the Methodist
church to Rev. T. M. Christian,
who is leaving this week for his
new assignment at Perry.
Tho choir rendered several beau
tiful anthems and tho congregation
joined heartily in singing Bro.
Christian's favorite hymn, "I Love
to Tell The Story."
A feeling of sadness pervaded
the entire congregation as the re
tiring pastor, befoie launching
iutohi.s farewell sermon, told ot.r
people how he loved them and
with what great regret he was
leaving our splendid little city,
for he. through I he graco of God,
has wrought mightily.for good
among us during his year's stay in
Blakely.
Tho prcacher chose Ihe first
throe verses of th;> first chapter of
?Jospina as his text and brought a
very strong message to our people:
showing how the work of the
Kingdom would continue despite
the deaths of leaders?leaders may
come and leaders may dio, but
(iod's work shall be continued
until the whole world has heard
tho Cospol story.
Following the sermon, Mr. John
Underwood, a deacon of tho Bap
tist church, asked the privilege of
saying a few words. He recounted
the splendid work done during tho
revivals in the several churches,
in w ie.h all the city pastors took
such a whole-hearted interest, and
which dr w our Christian people
in to such a fine spirit of fellowship,
and told of the great regret thai
the Baptist people feel at his
.joing away
Then came the denouncement
if the service, when the Bapti.-t
pastor. Rev. J.S. llartsfield, aski d
privilege to say a few words, and
stepped to tho platform, where l.e
ecouutcd how the departing broth*
t had been such a splendid yoke
fellow during their brief stay in
Blakely. Then he pulled from its
concealing wrapper a beautiful
"loving cup." which he Plated he
Imd been asked by the Methodist
?ongrcgatlon to present to their

tfartsfield's description of the
loving cup was a beautiful bit of
v??rd painting and the presenta
ion brought teara not only to
i'ro. Christian's eyes, but to many
>f tin; congregation, and it was
several moments before he could
control his emotions sufficiently to
espond, bnt respond lie did, and
with such loving words that
everybody present felt a spirit of
regret that he must leave Blakely
for a new field.
The people of Pcny will find
lim a true blue follower of the
Master and if they will only back
:?i in ti p he will put the devil to
route in their community as he
has done in Blakely.
