DEPUTY SHERIFF ASSAULTED
BY TWO PRISONERS
Ab farray Coiqaers Prisoners After Hard
Straggle.
Two prisoners Charles Butts and
Thomas Sharpe. assaulted Deputy
Sheriff A. B. Murray in the run
round of the county jail here late
Wednesday afternoon in an at*
tempt to escape. After being
struck with a milk bottle and
severely out about the face Deputy
Murray finally succeeded in pre
venting their escape and locked
thein in their cells.
When Mr. Murray opened the
door of the?jail* run-round where
the prisoners were, Sharpe threw
a blanket over his head while the
other struck bim several vicious
blows ovor the head with the
bottle. Wbile still stunned he was
cut about the facc by one of the
men villi broken picces of the
bottle. Cbas. Butts is said to be
the man who weilded the bottle.
After a struggle against odds
and blinded by the blood in his
face, Mr, Murray succeeded in
getting his pistol into play, and
fired at one of the men, glazing
his clothing. He then forccd them
into a cell and locked them in.
Attracted by the struggle several
men came to the rescue but not
until the prisoners had been coi
quered.
Mr. Murray was given medical
attention, although badly cut
about the face and bruised from
the blows and weakened from the
loss of blood is doing nicely.
The prisoners who assaulted the
Deputy sheriff are the same who
stole a Buick automobile belong
ing to S- L. Norwood, Jr. about
two weeks ago. They havo con
fessed to the theft of his car and
also one belonging to Mrs. Powell
of Macon.
They will be tried at the Janu
ary term of Superior Court.

Perry Schools, have gone to their
homes in Gray for Christmas.

school English teacher, is spending
the holidays with her family at
Sparta, Ga.

to spend the Xmas holidays with
her parents, Mr, and .Mrs. C. K.

CAR WRECKED KILLING
NAN FROM PERRY
Nathan Childres Killed; Howell C. Walker
Critically Injured; Evans Thorton Also
Badly Injured.
One man was instantly killed,
another probably fatally injured
and a third seriously hurt in an
automobile accident souie twenty
miles southwest of Jacksonville,
Fla. last Thursday.
Nathan Cbildress of this county
was killed, his neck broken, when
the light machine overturned
while rounding a sharp curve. H.
C. Walker, the driver, is uncon
scious in a Jacksonville hospital
with internal injuries and fractur
ed skull. Evans Thorton is in the
same hospital with bis right arm
and leg broken and possibly in
ternal injuries.
The party was said to have beei
enroute from Sanford, Fla., into
Georgia.
Nathan Childres, who was kill
ed is from near Perry, Ga., where
he has a wife.
Evans Thornton also resides near
Perry.
H. C. Walker is a brother of
Mrs. J W. Blood worth of Perry.
She wont to his bedside
soon after the accident. Late
reports say that he is still un
coi s^ious and in a very serious
condition.

was taken to Roberta, the home of
his parents, where funeral serviees
and burial took plaeo on last
Saturday.
CAR WRECKED DY DRUNKEN
DRIVER IN FORD
A Buick coupe io which Mr.
S. L Norwood Jr. and his wife
were sitting was run into by
another car and bailly damaged
on the Macon road Saturday
night. According to accounts the
Ford car was seen comiug down
the road weaving from one side to
the other, out of control. To
avoid a collision Mr. Norwood
stopped his car on the side of llie
road. However the Ford swerved
out of the read and hit his car
from the rear side tearing out the
transmission and inflicting other
damages. None of the parties was
injured.
The negro driver, Ike Lovott
was taken into custody, and his
negro companion left the scene in
a hurry.
This automobile is the same
that was stolen and recovered
after an exciting chase less than
two weeks ago.

Civitans entertained their ladies
and installed the officers lor Ilia
new year This delightful affair
was given last Thursday evening

House.
Dr. Chas. Lane, of Macon enter,
tained the guests with his inimit
able humor.
Mr. J. P. Etheridge made a
short address before surrendering
his office as president to Mr. 11.
P. Houser. Mr. Ethridge intro
duced the other new offioers: N

Andrew, secretary and treasurer;
Alexander Holm, sargent-at-arm*.
In an acceptance speech the new
president asked the co-operation

coming year.
Immediately after dinner Santa
Clans appeared and distributed
gifts to every one pre?ent from a
beautifully decorated Christmas

Each Civitan was presented
with a leather bill folder by the
retiring president. Mr. S. A. Nnnn
presented Mr. Etheridge with a

tans in appreciation of his ser
vices as president.
The improvised banquet hal
was decorated with quantities of
Southern smilax, holly, mistletoe,
and streamers of red and green
erepe paper The central table
decoration was a miniature scene
of Eskimo land, with Eskim* hnto,
dogs, and men, and Santa Clat s
in his sled hitched to reindeera.
This decoration was the work of
Mrs. S. L. Norwood, Jr. and Mrs.
N. V. Geyer.
The entertainment committee,
composed of S. L. Norwood, Jr , G.
C Njiuu, Harper Short, N. V.
Geyer, and their wives, were
highly praised for this lovely
enter.uinment.
