CiNTRAt HOLDS EfFCIENCY MEETING
In a statement issued today dis
cussing the Central of Georgia's
Fifteenth Annual Efficiency Meet
ing. which will be held this year
at Macon, Ua., January 18 and 19,
President J. J. Pelley declares
this meeting is important, both to
the employes and to the patrons
of the railroad.
Calling attention to the steadily
improving transportation service
performed by the railroads, Mr.
Pelley quotes from President
Cullidgc's last message to Con
gress, in which the chief executive
said that railroad service in 1926
surpassed all previous records,
and that this prompt and depend
able transportation service was one
of the large contributing factors
to the present highly satisfactory
economic condition of the United
States.
The Central's President declares
that this better service is in part
tho result of careful planning by
railroad management and ol judi
cious expenditnres of large sums
for the improvement of track,
rolling stock aud other facilities.
He aiso states that seme of the
improvenieut is due to the co
operation bet wet n railroads and
their patrons through traffic clubs,
shippers' advisory boards and the
like, but attributes a very large
part of the -credit to the har
monious relations between railway
management and employes during
1926.
Discussing the importance of
the human element in railroading
President Pelley asserts that
t h Central was ono of the first
railroads to encourage meetings
where officers and employes could
come together to discuss means of
improving the road's service to
the public. He states that it has
been demonstrated conclusively
that increased efficiency and loyal
ty are direct results of these
meetings, and that for this reason
they are important, not only to
tho employee but to-the public
generally.
Among the subjects to be d is
cusssd at this year's meeting, Mr
Pelley lists: the safety of tie
traveling public, courtesy in deal
ing with patrons ?whether directly
or through correspondence, the
better care of freight and passenger
business entrusted to our company,
tho elimination of waste, the con
servation of fuel, prevention of
loss and damage to freight and
baggage, the smoother handling of
freight and passenger cars, the
elimination of personal injuries,
co-operation between different, de
partments of the railroad, and
other topics connected with satis
factory service to railroad patrons

The naval observatory says, accord
ing to George Ellery Ilale, the diam
eter of Betel geuse Is certainly more
than 100,000,000 miles and probably
as much as 215,000,000. The diameter
of the sun being 80-1,000 miles, Betel
geuse Is therefore roughly of 250 time?
greater djameter and 15,000,000 times
greater volume. However, It Is sup
posed to consist of matter In an ex
trcmely attentuoted condition. Though
the weight of Betelgouse Is now
known, the fact that no star whose
weight has been determined Is as much
as 100 times as heavy os the sun
makes It unlikely that Betelgeuse Is
heavy In proportion to Its volume.
Strange Race of People
There Is an nnclent race In India,
the Todns, nearly extinct now, that
resembles the gypsies. Its members
speak n stronge tongue, make hovels
out of mud topped with a kind of
pyramid, in the hills. They are sullen,
savage, chary of approach. They wor
ship dark, occult gods, who preside
over death and life. They do not
wander like the gypsies. In their Iso
lation one supposes that the wolves
and the vultures r nd the Jackals are
their familiars?fear being on neither
side. They worship stones and star?,

The best of workers get out of
