THRIFT WEEK
Mondav hegiin the observance of
National Thrift Week which has
been set apart throughout the na
tion as time to adjust the incomes
for the year and resolve to put
living on a Jbusiness-like basis.
Monday was Thrift Day, Tues
day, Budget Day; Wednesday,
Insurance Day; Thursday, Own
Your Home Day. Friday is Safe
Investment Day; Saturday, Pay
Your Bills Day; Sunday, Share
Work With Others Day.
A definition of Thrift as given
by Edwin Aldine Pound, state
high school supervisor and which
appeared in the recent issue of
the Georgia Education Journal
follows:
I am Thrift.
1 am the sister of self-denial,
the friend of frugality, the moth
er of liberty, independence, and
wealth.
I am the foe of self-indulgence,
the opponent of luxury, the ene
my of vice and extravagance.
I am a pacifist, yet I fight with
all resources of the individual
and the nation against ignorance,
ill-health, intemperance and im
providence.
I close now the gates of self
indulgence, in order that tomor
row I may oj>en wide the golden
gates of happiness and content
ment.
1 subordinate present gratifica
tion for future power and glory.
I make men independent. 1
gird them with the buckler and
shield of riches and wealth. I
thus give them power. I length
en their reach, spiritually and fi
nancially. I place them upon
the hilltops of independence
above the morasses of improvi
dence and poverty. I set all
who follow me above the com
mon herd, as a lighthouse above
the sea.
I establish bank accounts. I
increase savings. I build homes.
I develop eight cylinder men in
stead of a two-cylinder run-about
kind.
I set the hearts of men a-sing
ing my song of thrift and fill
their souls with contentment.
I not only drive the wolf from
the door, but out of his hide. I
weave the garments of comfort.
1 know that he who is able to
buy what he wants has riches,
but he who saves what he makes
has jx>wer.
I, Thrift, strengthen youth
with aspiration, I make the old
men strong over the infirmities
of old age.
I cheer the poor by a contem
plation of growing riches. I en
courage the rich by a conserva
tion of what they have.
I, Thrift, am a habit, not a di
sease. I come to implore the
youth of the land to celebrate my
week in January, '27, to learn to
make money, to economize, to
save. Even though the saving
be but a penny a week-that's
worth while. I teach you to ap
preciate the fact that "many a
mickel makes a muckle."
Again, 1 am Thrift. I am the
friend of economy, the foe of
niggardliness, the ally of a sane
liberality, and a generous chari
ty.
