One of the best features brought
out In a recent Gwinnett County
Canning Project was the fact that
the State of Georgia is particularly
suited to make the canning of fruits
and vegetables an activity of great
commercial importance.
The project, which grew out of
a co-operative arrangement be
tween the State Agricultural Lead
ers, the Extension and Vocational
Agricultural Departments of Gwin
nett County, and officials of Sears,
Roebuck and Company, in Atlanta,
has resulted In the production of j
almost 60,000 cans of high quality !
fruits and vegetables for distri
bution among the thousand farm
families who contributed the labor
and the materials, and the unem
ployed in Atlanta. The cans and
labels were furnished by Sears,
Roebuck and Company.
It furnished additional proof that
there Is no single section of the
country better suited for commer
cial canning than the State of
Georgia. The soil and climate com
bine to provide a growing season
of perfect suitability. The high
quality and the great variety of
production, together with the long
season, blend admirably into an
ideal situation. The large consum
ing population of the State in
sures a constant demand.
Another Important advantage is
the increased income made possi
ble under this arrangement- The
close proximity of the raw mate
rials to the consuming market
brings about an economical han
dling that should enable these
commodities to compete with any
on the market from a price and
certainly on a quality basis.
It is hoped that the successful
culmination of the plan in Gwin
nett County will point the way to
a general adoption of the idea
throughout the State. For years
the leaders of agricultural thought
in the Southeast have felt that
Georgia should feed herself. The
native Georgian has a preference
for Georgia products, with what he
considers that distinctive Georgia
flavor. When all the facts are
considered, and in view of what
has been done, it is not unreason
able to believe that Georgia will
feed herself—completely and not
far distant.

Hit Wood
Don Bradman, the Australian crick
et champion now playing In America,
tells this one; At a village match in
England the local butcher was bat
ting when a ball bumped up and hit
him on the head, from which the
wicket keeper made a catch.
‘‘Out I” yelled the umpire.
“But It’s off my head, not my bat,’’
protested the player.
“I don’t know where it ’it you,”
responded the umpire, “but I knows
the sound of wood, so hout you go.”—

During the World war the well culti

Errors
The little I have seen of the world
teaches me to look upon the errors of
others in sorrow, not in anger. When
I take the history of one poor heart that
has sinned and suffered, and represent
to myself the struggles and tempta
tions it has passed through, the brief
pulsation of joy, the feverish inquie
tude of hope and fear, the pressure of
want, the desertion of friends, I
would fain leave the erring soul of
ray fellow man with him from whose
hand it came.—Longfellow.
Plaintive “Love Song”
When you hear the plaintive drawn-
out wall that is the note of the screech
owl, you will wonder where the tuftea
little fellow ever got his name. If
you are melancholy yourself you may
vibrate in sympathy to the note of sad
ness in his voice. If you are super
stitious, you will think of evil things
to happen. To many folks the harm
less little owl, smallest of all the
“eared” owls, is regarded as a bird
of ill omen. But if you are a lover of
the wild, and interested In living
things for their own sakes, you will
probably say that the screech owl Is
only uttering his love song—appreci
ated by none except the one for whose
ears it is Intended.—Exchange.
Blindfolded Judge
James Hawkins Peck, Missouri's first
United States judge, dispensed justice
literally blindfolded like the allegori
cal figure of the goddess of justice, in
the days when St. Louis was a mere
fur-trading post of only 5,000 popula
tion.
Judge Peck always sat on the bench
blindfolded, affecting this covering be
cause of fear that light would cause
him to lose his sight. Whenever he
left his home he donned the blind
fold. A servant led him to his car
riage and assisted him to his place In
the courtroom. The clerk ol the
court and attorneys appearing before
him were forced to read all essential
documents to him.—Detroit News.

Roman Senate
Romulus was the first to organ; *

Julius Caesar raised the number of

Ancient “Dictaphone’’
The term “Far uf Dionysius” refers
to the second or the ‘‘latomiae,” or
quarries of Syracuse used as prisons.
The Athenians were confined therein,

grottoes is one resembling the tym

remarkable for its echoes. It is Cl
