We believe the election of mem
bers of the school board is one
office in which the patrons of the
school should take a special arm
an active interest; first to the end
that candidates qualified for the
peculiar duties of the position an
put up, and second that having
been put up, those qualified for
the place are elected. There are
certain qualifications that supply to
an aspirant to a position of this
kind that do not have to lie con
sidered in any other elective po
sition The mere fact that a man

children in School does not <|<iali-

of the school board. A member
of the school board, in addition
to having the necessary business

sympathetic understanding of,and
attitude toward, the problems of
the schools and what the schools
are trying to do. Asa rule po

actively sought after. This is One
instance in which the office should
seek the man. There is no com-

DEMOCRACY’S OBLIGATION
The approach of the national
conventions of the two major par-
lies tends to make every one good
government conscious. In a nation
like ours whose leadershipts Chosen
by the individuals Of the nation,
it is important that those offered
in community, state and nation
should he the type and kind of
men whom the “Inst of offiee can
not kill.” Perhaps the greatest
danger that a democracy fates
is the inability of the mass ol
voters to determine between p
statesman and a demagogue, and
this goes from the highest offici
down to the lowest in the home
town.
Most people think they vot
for the best man, I he iesp nsi
biiity, however, in the matter o
selection Carries with it the obli
gat ion to know as far as it i
humanly possible to know, whicl
candidate is the better qualified.
The man who knowingly votes fot
an inferior candidate, lacking ii
intelligence and piineiple ant
proper concept in his responsibili
ty and obligation, is an enemy ti
his State and his nation. No part.'
line should be strong enough u
influence a vote in such an in
stance. A democracy, Mjrh
We of this Country ate privileged
to enjoy, deserves a greater mi*#
sure of loyally from its subject
than this, and incidentally, if it
is to co.itinue ; ni to progress
and develop to its fullest, inns
