TAX RECEIVER’S NOTICE
I will be in Perry every Satur
day from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. un
til May 1, for the purpose of re
ceiving taxes.
W. C. Watson, T. C.
The reduction of the state ad
valorem tax rate from four to
three mills, as promised by Gov
ernor Talmadge, will be very
fine but we doubt ii the taxpay
ers of Houston county will bene
fit from it. Why de we say this?
For the reason that our commis
sioners did not let us benefit two
years ago when the state tax was
cut from live mills to four mills.
The commissioners just added
one mill more to the county tate
leaving the total rate at 31 mills.
The taxes in Georgia that bear
down heavily upon the small tax
payers are the county taxes, mu
nicipal taxes, and school distiici
taxei, Wo need a tax revision
program whereby the small pro
perty owner would get relief
from the crushing burden ol
county, city, and school distrie.
taxes. Sixty-eight percent of
the population of Georgia pay nc
direct taxes at all, which means
that thirty-two percent are beat
ing the whole taxation load.
We believe the fifteen mill ta>
limitation on tangible property
and the five mill tax limitatioi
on intangible property would
bring great relief to properb
owners. This could be supple
mented with a sales tax if more
income were needed.
Again, we repeat that it is not
the state tax rate that is sc
burdensome. Perr y propert\
owners pay 43'J mills tax (3"j
mills county and 12b mil’s city
every year. These county ant
city taxes need reducing.

Cabbage, Turnip Found
Destroyers of Bacteria
A subtle new power In turnip juice
««nd cabbage juice to kill bacteria was
reported to the Society of American
Bacteriologists by ,T. M. Sherman and
H. M. Hodge of Cornell university.
This power they said is similar to
the substances found in blood which
Inhibit bacteria. It Is not, they ex
plained, tlie germicidal power of some
plant juices which has been known for
many years, but “a more subtle type
of bacterial inhibiting substances.”
This bacteria-killing factor in turnip
and cabbage juice, says the Columbus
Dispatch, is destroyed by a tempera
ture of about MO degrees Fahrenheit
for ten minutes, and also by higher
temperatures.
The germ power lasts 100 degrees for
eight or more hours. The substance
can he strained out of the juice by
very line filters. It will stick to the
surface of activated carbon.
This turnip and cabbage germ-killing
juice is more potent Ilian the germi
cidal power of fresh milk, and loss S->
than that of fresh normal blood. At
tempts to find similar substances it;
carrots, parsnips and cucumber failed.

Pawned Wives Refuse to Return
Husbands of Peiping, China, who
thought t he idea of pawning their
wives a great one, now are appealing
to tlie police to get their mates back.
They say that when ttiey were ready
to repay the loan they could not re
deem the wives. The trouble is not
with tlie lenders, but with the women
themselves who refuse to return to
their erstwhile husbands on a variety
of pretexts. Above all, they accuse
their husbands of harboring the de
sign of sending them to Manchukuo
next, and state that, although they
are prepared for everything in reason,
that is a step to which as patriotic
Chinese women they can never agree.
There is no law dealing with tiiis par
ticular form of pawn-broking.
