Nothing But The Truth
—By—
PAUL MUSE
“The truth shall make you
free.” In this statement Jesus
announced a principle that is
applicative in all realms. To
ignore the principle involved is
to court disaster. Nothing that
is not the truth, not right, can
continue to go forward or con
tinue to stand. Individuals,
groups of individuals and
whole nations have committed
suicide because in their enter
prises they have violated the
truth. Even when the truth it
self is the ultimate aim if the
policies and means employed
infringe on the truth only fail
ure can result. No movement
need hope for ultimate success
only in proportion to the truth
it marshals.
No effort political, religious,
economic, or of any sort, that:
is not honest to the core can [
ever do any good. This is why
the political and economic)
troubles of the world frequent-)
ly remain unsettled, while j
doubtless the same may be said
of the world’s religious
ences. Too frequently move
ments in these realms enter
the phase of warfare. The
leaders may be sincere in seek
ing to accomplish good, but
amid bitter controversy the
spirit of “fight” is engendered,
and passions and prejudices
are followed frequently rather
than reason and truth. Not in
frequently during a political
campaign p r o p a g a n d a is
launched, not the truth, but
certain “talking points” calcu-l
lated to arouse opposition
through the fighting spirit of
men. A sort of mob mind is
created, and mobs, whether in J
the individual or in the mad i
mass of a thousand men, are I
never careful about the truth. 1
The president of a great un-!
iversity in this country said a
few years ago that a popular!
slogan, one that moved the em-|
otions, would get action from 1
the masses, while reason would
fall. This, to every sober mind
ed person, is rather discourag
ing. Popular slogans are not to
be trusted t o o frequently as
heralds of the truth. More of
ten. perhaps, they are the
voice of blind guides. Certain
it is that Jesus meant to say,
in the statement, “The truth
shall make you free,” that rea
son is better than passion. It
is patent that His words mean
that whether the issue involv
ed be sin in the individual, or
maladjustment in any various
relationships and interests of
men, there an be no remedy 1
that is apart from the truth, j
NOT BY MAN’S STRENGTH
ALONE
The bards extol the might of
man,
Yet insignifiiant is his
strength
Compared with that of an ele-i
phant
Whose mighty sinew’s strong
No mortal has overcome
Except with spear or gun of
super power.
Insignificant is t h e might of
man
Compared w’ i t h that of a
hurricane
Or a tempestrious sea;
Yet, there is One
Who can temper a raging'
storm
Or halt the traverse of the)
wind,
By His mighty voice alone.
Insignificant is the might of
of man
Should the monster, War de
scend
Upon him unawares;
Yet, had he the faith of
Gideon, I
And hope in the strong arm of
the Lord,
Glittering steel and flashing
sword
No fear for him would hold.

Where Allspice Conies From
The aromatic berries from which
allspice is made come from the
pimento tree, grown extensively on
the island of Jamaica. The export
figures reach a total of $500,000
a year. The wood of the pimento
tree is used for fine walking sticks.
It is of a hard, firm texture, and
takes an exceptionally high polish.
