Open New Registry
Service for Grasses
Improved grasses are being devel
oped in a co-operative program by
state and federal breeders. In 1941
j uniform grass nurseries were start- j
| ed to supply exact information as to
j the performance of the more prom
j ising strains of selected or crossed
! grasses and the areas where they
I grow best. There are now 66 nur
; series in 41 states, and the U. S. de
-1 partment of agriculture and the
| American Society of Agronomy have
i opened a new registry service, simi
lar to those operated for years on
| several of the field crops, particu
! larly the cereals. Alta fescue is the
I first grass to be registered officially
, as a superior strain or variety.
In contrast to wheat and rice and
i some other grains, which are usual
ly self-fertilized, many of the
grasses are cross fertilized in na
ture. Grass breeders find that this
has advantages and also disadvan
tages. In nature, cross fertilization
! has helped develop many grasses
j well suited to the areas in which
1 they grow. Breeders are also able
to select natural hybrids that prove
superior. Disadvantage appears in
the difficulty of keeping pure the
seed of highly superior strains.

Coal Stokers
One of the most significant devel
opments in the heating industry in
recent years is the introduction of
small coal stokers for the automatic
firing of coal. Nearly one million
stokers are in use today. The ad
vantage of stoker firing is not mere
ly that it does away with the manual
labor of firing but also the fact that
it makes possible a better utilization
of fuel. Stokers burn smaller and
cheaper sizes of coal. Through more
scientific firing and better control of
combustion, further savings are ef
fected. A stoker fired heating plant
is virtually smokeless. A stoker pro
vides automatic banking when not
in operation, thus lessening room air
stratification. There are two types
of stokers—hopper and bin. The for
mer consists of a hopper with space
for about 15 hours’ coal supply, fan
for properly apportioned draft,
screw conveyor extending from hop
per to firebox, and a small motor for
power. Bin-type stokers are almost
identical with the exception that a
screw conveyor runs directly from
coal bin to firebox.

R.E. MARTIN, THEATRE (ifi
TO BE HONORED IN FEBRUARY
I
Martin & Thompson Theatres,
Affiliates and Motion Picture Dis’.
tributors are sponsoring aK. E.
Martin 34th Anniversary Month
during February. Mr. Martin’s
first venture in the Theatre busi
ness was in the Benita Theatre
in Columbus, Georgia in Febru
ary of 1912, thirty-four years
ago. Theatre operations in those
days were considerably different
from the present day. In 1912
Theatres received their complete
week’s program from the old
General Film Company in Atlan
ta for a total cost of $lO.OO and
had to make up their own adver
tising in as much as there was
no printed advertising on Motion
Pictures at that time. In those
days Motion Picture houses were
known as Nickelodens and the
price was 5c to everyone.
The cheap film rentals and
cheap admission prices were the
two vital factors in making mo
tion pictures so popular with the
public. Today the picture is
quite different. The public has
become educated to higher
standards of entertainment and
are demanding super-colossal
productions.
Whereas theatre men paid
$lO.OO for the complete week’s
program wffien showing for sc,
now the largest part of the films
cost him 50% of the money he
takes in at the Box Office, leaving
him only 50% to defray all the
operational expenses. Naturally
with pictures that cost a Million
and upward to produce in pres
ent times cannot be shown
for sc.
The Theatre Industry has pro
gressed to the 4th largest indus
try in the world. Practically
every village and hamlet on the
face of the globe have a modern
up to date Theatre for the enter
tainment of their community.
Mr. K. E. Martin in his 34 years
of theatre experience has played
a big part in the progress of
Motion Picture in our home town
and the State of Georgia and he
is continuing to do everything
possible to give you and the oth
er people of this community bet
ter entertainment in your local
Theatre,
This month the Motion Picture
Industry in the State of Georgia
is honoring this veteran in the
Motion Picture business. You
too are urged, as a citizen of
your community, to take part in
this great celebration.— Adv.
