Real ‘Bargain’
Tijuana, Mexico
Dear Editor;
“Ah! Senorita Deloris, but you
are the perfect model for this!’ I
was walking along Tijuana
thorough-fare with a jillion other,
American tourists when this hand- \
some Mexican with the oily tongue
draped a handbag over my shoulder
and made a model out of me. “See,
it was made just for you, Senorita.
Feel of it. Smell of it. It’s pure lea
ther. The best. Hand made right
here in the back of my shop.” ,
‘ “How much?’’ I asked him.
“I give you good price today. To
day I sell everythinig for no profit.
Just the cost. Today I work for
nothing because its subh beautiful
day.”
‘How much?” I asked him.
"I tell you what,” he rolled his
eyes around like he was going to i
tell us a big secret and didn’t want
his competitors to hear, “ I give you
very special price. So special you
can’t believe it.” i
“How much?” My curosity was
mounting.
He wrote sls on a little pad,
shielding it with his hand so no one
■but us could see it. “That’s no pro
fit. Because you Senoritas are so
pretty I work for nothing today so
you can model these beautiful
bags.”
There were three of us. We told
him we wanted to look around some
more. “I tell you what,” he whis
pered, “if you buy three bags I
give you extra special price. You
won’t believe it.” On the pad he |
wrote $7.50. “Only if you buy three
understand?”
I said I would buy one. The other
girls said no. “I tell you what,” he
smiled, “I feel so good today and
you are such fc pretty model, I sell
you one bag for $7.50. No nrofit.
H is such a beautiful day. Today I
■work for nothing. Okav?”
“Okay,” I said, and bought myself
a beautiful bag to model.

Fight for Freedom
Lesson for February 19, 1950,
SPHERE ARE TWO KINDS of
problems with living things.
One is the kind of problem caused
by its growing too fast; the other
is the problem caused by not grow
ing fast enough. The early church
had mostly the first kind of prob
lem, at any rate it was taking in a
lot of members
all Christians had mS?
been Jews; no one p"
seen, and even Jt J|i|
more as the church „ „
spread westward Dr - Foreman
around the edge of the Mediter
ranean, the Christian churches were
filling up with non-Jewish mem
bers, just as they are today.
It is no secret that in the Mason
ic order there are 33 degrees. It
is not possible for a new member
to be taken right into the 33rd de
gree the first night. Everybody has
to go through the lower degrees
which are called the Blue Lodge.
Now many persons in that early
! church thought of the Jewish faith
as a sort of Christian Blue Lodge.
Ail the very earliest Chris
tians bad been members of
that lodge; why shouldn’t every
one else be the same? So when
Paul and Barnabas came back
from that historic missionary
tour of Cyprus and points
north, feeing about the large
j mimbe of new Christians,
, these old-style Christians shook
their heads.
Paul was by-passing the Blue
Lodge; he was taking in members
who had not gone through the prop
er preliminaries, the last degrees.

What Makes a Man
A Christian?
| pAUL KNEW a real Christian
* when he saw one. So did
Barnabas. And the two of them
knew, right down in their souls,
that they had seen real conver
sions, genuine cases of persons
coming out of pagan darkness into
Christian light, without being Jews
at all, even for five seconds.
The vital question was simply
t! What makes a Christian? The
old style Christians, who had been
! Jews themselves and still were,
fer all their Christian faith, said;
Unless you are circumcised and
keep all the laws of Moses, you
cannot be saved—you cannot even
becin to be a Christian. Paul and
E: inabas—not alone, but as spokes
man for many others n the church
—said: You are saved by faith.
The Jerusalem Chr ian said:
Vcs y are rrvod i-v faith, AND
I’■ k; .ng the lav.- of Moses. Paul
» •'<: veil are ■d I y faith, period.

1 P vv Tlmv Sett'cd It
'.HE WAY that problem was
settled is a model for all
Christian churches with problems
on tho : r hands. First of all, the
I argument was brought out into the
it was not a whispering cam
paign. Second, it was settled after
giving both sides plenty of oppor
tunity for full discussion in public.
Third, it was settled not informally
* but by a church council, a group of
; representative leaders, not by a
simple majority vote of all church
members indiscriminately. Fourth,
It was settled (as the reader of Acts
15 may see) by appeals to fact and
to Scripture,
Finally, once the leaders had
made up their minds, the
church at large accepted their
decision promptly, without fur
ther bickering. This has been
i the pattern for the Christian
| church ever since, though alas!
it has not always been followed.
There would have been fewer
church splits if the example of the
early church had been more ser
iously taken,

Faith and Obedience
ESSENTIALLY, that first great
*■* church council decided on the
side of Paul and Barnabas But
they did not throw the Old Testa
ment overboard. The moral law
was as good as it ever Was. But
| the council showed, once and for
| all, the true relations between
I Christian faith and obedience to
the law of God.
There is just one doorway to
the Father’s house, the door
way of faith. We do not have to
keep the law of Moses, or any
set of laws, first. We are
saved BY obedience.
We are not saved FROM obedi
ence. But we are saved FOR obe
dience. A Christian’s obedience to
God is not away of earning God’s
good-will. It is a grateful response
I' to God's grace. And that makes all
the difference in the world.
