Fire Prevention
Contest Underway
Houston county is not eligible
to participate in the “Keep Geor
gia Green" forest fire prevention
contest now underway in the
state, because it is not among the
85 counties having an organized
fire control system.
Counties without such pro
grams are urged to consider start
ing them "because the preven
tion of even one forest fire may
save jobs and income far more
valuable to any county than any
prize,” State Forester Guyton
DeLoach said.

county showing the greatest pro
gress in woods fire prevention
; and suppression during the next
nine months, B, M. Lufburrow,
executive secretary of the Ga.
Forestry association, reported. He
said the purpose of the contest is
fourfold: 1. Reduce the number
of forest fires, 2. Reduce the to
tal acreage burned, 3. Stimulate
interest in better forest protec
tion, 4. Create a greater sense of
personal responsibility regarding
forest fire prevention among all
citizens.
The 85 counties cooperating
with the fire control system of
the Georgia Forestry Commission
for one or more years prior to
July 1, 1951, may participate.
Veterans Training
Deadline Near
Houston county veterans who
are interested in the farm train
i :m; program must be approved
! by the Veterans Administration
by July 25 or be disqualified for
benefits.
J. C. Gornto, teacher of the
veterans’ farm training class, said
vacancies exist in the Houston
county class and urged interested
veterans to make application at
once.
W. D. Kersey
Recalls "Life
With Peaches''
W. D. Kersey, Houston County,
was growing peaches long before
Georgia ever thought of becom
ing the Peach State. He says he
has been growing them nearly all
his life, but first remembers
working with peaches in 1908
when his father was growing
them near Thomaston, in Upson
County.
Mr. Kersey moved to Houston
County in 1910. Since that time,
through good years and bad
years, he and two brothers, C. L.
and J. W., have done their part
to keep “The Peach State" on
Georgia’s automobile tags.
This year, one of the good ones,
there are 30,000 peach trees on
this farm. More than 300 acres
are in orchard. The Kersey bro
thers are right in the middle of
their season, shipping peaches to
New York, Philadelphia, Boston
and Cleveland. All their fruit is
sold on the fresh market.
Worm-Free Peaches
Reflecting on the revolution
that has come to the peach indus
try, W. D. Kersey thinks one o£
the greatest developments has
been in spraying for insects. “We
have no trouble now producing a
worm-free peach,” he said. Mr.
Kersey doesn’t worry about that/
One of the biggest problems,
he said and this might come
as a surprise to some is mar
keting. Mr. Kersey
that peaches come from every
nook and corner. You can find,
them on the roadsides, in every
store and on nearly every farmv
he added. The result is too many
peaches.
That’s what is happening to the
Hiley variety, he explained.
There are too many of them, so
newer varieties are coming along.
The Kersey brothers’ chief va
rieties are Early Rose, Hiley and
Elberta. Most of the new varie
ties are yellow peaches, one of
the chief ones being Dixie Gem,
which the Kerseys are growing.
Good Crop 4th Year
They are trying to maintain
their 30,000 trees. When one tree
goes out of production, another
one comes in.
W. D. Kersey explained that a
tree will produce its third or
fourth year. “We usually have a
good crop the fourth year," he
said.
The average life of a tree is
Faster Mail
Service Seen
With Trucks
Prospects that Houston county
residents might eventually get
faster mail service within the
county and with nearby counties,
through the use of more mail
trucks, appeared last week.
The Postal Transportation
Service in Atlanta announced
that the government is going to
adopt a policy of using mail
trucks instead of trains for mail
hauls of less than 150 miles be
cause the truck hauls are faster
and more economical.
First approved mail truck route
in this direction will be between
Macon and Atlanta, but it is
hoped that the mail truck service
will eventually be extended to
towns within the county and to
nearby cities not now directly
connected with Perry by rail
lines.
Perry has been served by mail
truck for several years but only
to Fort Valley where it connects
with trains.
Perry has three tourist facili
ties recommended by Duncan
Hines and the American Auto
mobile Association.
from 10 to 12 years. It was once
18 to 20 years, but new diseases
have cut it down.
When trees are young, the Ker
seys sometime plant cotton or
peas between them, but once the
trees are mature the land “goes
to grass.” They use a little cov
er crop in the orchard, but not
much. Mr. Kersey explained that
cover crops eventually will build
up too much ammonia.
Half-Million Trees
W. T. Middlebrooks, county
agent in Houston County, the
state’s second largest peach-pro
ducing county, reports that there
are a half million trees in Hous
ton. He stated that it takes
growers like the Kerseys to stay
in the business. In Houston 17
years, Mr. Middlebrooks has seen
only one new grower take the
gamble.
“It is a hazardous business,”
Mr. Kersey said.
The Kerseys have their pack
ing shed among their trees. Joe
Watson, a federal-state inspector
is on duty there, checking size
and for any kind of defects. (
Peaches leaving the Kersey Bros,
peach shed are No. I’s, he said.
