$631 Is Raised Here
For Negro Football
The purpose for the Homecom
ing of Houston County High School
on January 30 was an effort to in
itiate football in our school and
community to begin the school
term, 1953-54.
There are nine active organiza
tions in the school and six in the
community, anmely: In the school
Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, Choral Club, NHA,
4-H, Science Club, English Club,
Athletic Club and School Patrol;
in the community, PTA, American
Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, Alumni
Association .Veteran Class, and
Boy Scouts of America.
Many of these clubs and organi
zations supported the parade from
their own financial strength and
labor. Others who did not have
floats in the parade cooperated
with those who did. The band and
coronation were financially sup
ported by the school at large,
which was the accumulation of
funds saved from snack bars and
basketball games. The actual a
mount raised in the contest were
donations from the business peo
ple of Houston County, classes and
friends. This amount was $631.58,
which was deposited in Perry Loan
and Savings Bank to be supple
mented at a later date.
Each of these organizations men
tioned is well supervised by teach
ers and other competent people for
the purpose of acquiring the prop
er growth and development of pu
pils through varied activities in
the school and community. If the
school is aimed toward helping
youths live in present day society,
mental development alone will not
suffice, but every phase of youth
must be considered. Therefore,
physical education is an important
way of meeting the needs of youth
in physical .mental and moral
training.
One of the needs of all youth is
recreation ,and one of the func
tions of education is to provide
suitable recreational activities both
in school and out of school life.
Physical activities provide a maj
or part of this program but not all
of it. Some of the main objectives
or our school are:
1. To provide school enviroment
that will be conducive to the best
mental and physical development
of our pupils.
2. To stimulate pupils in habits
and attitudes of proper living.
3. To arouse the interest of pu
pils in the improvement of present
