LIQUOR VOTE
a week on some phase of the liq
our referendum fight, quoting
various officials of the county and
‘ cities of Perry and Warner Robins.
Mr. Walker was quoted as say
ing Houston county already is "as
wet as it can be” and that the
vote on legal liquor will be held
| sometime in August.
Police Chief J. B. Hawkins of
Perry was quoted as saying that if
Mr. Walker can "dry up the coun
ty” if the people vote against legal
liquor, “why doesn’t he go ahead
and clean it up now?” Chief Haw
kins said there is a lot of "week
end” bootlegging sale of whis
key by the drink out of pint bot
tles which can be disposed of hur
riedly in case of a police raid. He
said his department is raiding an
average of three houses every
night.
Sheriff C. C. Chapman was
quoted as saying that those who
talk about the bootlegging in the
county won’t turn over to him any
search warrants. He said there’s
liquor in every county and that
Houston county "could be a lot
wetter than it is.”

CLOSE GATE. HORSE GONE:
Not having needed a rain guage !
for the last couple of years, we 1
got one this week AFTER all those
big juicy rains that we should
have measured. But we are ready '
for the next one, thanks to rain
guage furnished by Andrew Truck
and Tractor Co. Just guessing,
we’d say Perry had about two
inches from Friday noon to Mon
day night.
SEEING STARS: We have on
The Home Journal mailing list
such names as Van Johnson, John
Payne and Robert Taylor. Not
the movie stars, though.
STREET SCENES; Two little
children, about 2 years old, hold
ing out their hands to feel Thurs
days rain probably the first
they had seen since birth. Scene
2: Northern tourist commenting;
“Look at all those black bugs fly
ing around your head!” (Gnats

MAN POWER: Herb St. John,
