That man’s lucky. Some wives
would have been on trial for

Government girls in Washing
ton, D.C., weren’t slated to ac
company their bosses during the
recent Civil Defense evacuation
test. Wives reportedly had some
thing to do with this state of
affairs. They were more appre
hensive about atomic bums than
atomic bombs.
LES CARROLL
CEVERAL fine country blues
discs are riding high now
and, surprisingly, some are happy
tunes. Joan Hager's “Bob-O-
Llnk Blues” has a gay, lilting
quality and ‘‘Coin’ Steady With
the Blues” by George & Earl
features tricky, rocking rhythm
(Mercury). Ruby Wells (Victor)
sings she’s “Fighting the Blues”
and Ted Rains answers beauti
fully with “Free of the Blues"
(Decca). Jimmy Newman’s of
fering is the pretty "Blue Dar
lin' ” (Dot).
The girl vocalists have come
up with some great ballads, and
Wanda Jackson’s “Tears at the
Grand Ol’ Opry” should be ex
ceptionally popular (Decca).
Anita Carter duets beautifully
with herself in “I’m Sorry If
That’s the Way You Feel” (Vic
tor), and Jean Shepard (Capitol)
chooses the currently popular “A
Satisfied Mind.”
In the sacred vein the Rang
ers Quartet have a good, unusual
arrangement of “Sing, Brother,
Sing” (Capitol). King’s Reno &
Smiley duet nicely "Jesus Is
Waiting," and T. Tommy’s “Sal
vation Is Free” is also excellent
gospel singing (Mercury).
Red Foley has two good peppy
numbers in "You Little So and
So" and "Plantation Boogie,”
while Ernest Tubb does a cute
novelty number, “Have You
Seen," backed by a nice ballad,
“It’s a Lonely World” (All
Decca).
Carl Smith’s “Old Lonesome
ADVERTISING DOESN’T COST - IT PAYS!
Times" is one of his best, beau- 1
tifully and convincingly sung.
Carl also handles the vocal on
the Tunesmiths’ “There’s a Bot
tle Where She Used to Be.",
Jeanette Hicks and Billy Walker
have a great duet in “Let’s Make
Memories Tonight" (All Colum
bia).
Jesse Rogers puts his heart
into a fine ballad, "Impatient
Heart," while Bob Wills’ group
does the nice, swingy “So Long,
I’ll See You Later” (Both MGM).
Another good, bouncy one is
Benny Martin’s "That’s What I’ll
Do to You" (Mercury).
Capitol’s new artist, Hylo
Brown, bids for stardom with
“Get Lost, You Wolf” and "Lost
to a Stranger." And Jimmie
Rodgers Snow’s "Someone Else’s
Heartache” is one o( h;s top
releases (Victor).
OTHER GOOD RELEASES are
“Green Mountain Hop” (Reno &
Smiley, King); “Too Many Tears”
(Jimm & Jess, Capitol); "The
Kentuckian’s Song" (Eddie Ar
nold, Victor); “Summer Kisses”
(Cowboy Copus, King); “Under
way” (Tom Tall, Fabor); “Part
of Your Heart” (Opal Jean,
Hickory) and "Get Me On Your
Mind" (Ernie Chaffin, Hiekciy).
