Is Georgia Too Soft in Granting Paroles?
The horrible kidnapping and slaying of a Rome girl,
admittedly committed by a parolee not long out of a Georgia
prison, makes the people of this state wonder if we are being
too light on some criminals.
The man who told police that he committed the crime
should still be behind bars. The parole board knows that now,
and we feel sure that its members have wished many times
that they had not granted him his release.
But this is another indication that the parole board is
sometimes hasty in releasing a prisoner, and the lives and
property of Georgians are in danger.
Hardened law enforcement officers will tell you that the
parole board pardons and paroles too many prisoners too
soon. The officers must risk their lives to capture them in the
first place, then risk their lives again to capture them again
and again on future offenses against society. We must try to
rebuild lives of our prisoners but not at the risk of the lives
of others.
