Kerosene Users
Must Use Caution
Needless Deaths Each
Year on U. S. Farms
The kerosene stove can be a
killer. Every year, in all parts of
the country, newspapers carry re
peated stories about deaths caused
by misuse of kerosene appliances.
In spite of the advances in the
use of gas and electricity in home
heating and in the use of coal
and oil for fuel in furnaces, there
is still a heavy and growing de
mand for kerosene cook stoves
and portable heaters. These stoves
have been perfected so that the
country dweller to whom gas and

directions is recommended as

sene appliances.
electricity may not be available
can be as comfortable as the city
dweller. ,
The National Safety Council,
concerned over U>e needless deaths
occurring each year in farm homes
using kerosene appliances cautions
users to use them safely and to
avoid common dangers:
1. Follow manufacturers’ operate
ing instructions.
2. Burners should be clean at
all times.
3. When wicks are burning low,
they should be trimmed or re
placed. ,
4. Use only recommended fuel.
5. All approved • stoves should
bear the label of the Underwriters
Laboratories.
6. All cooking and heating de
vices should be in a level position.
7. Never leave your lighted stove
unattended —if you leave, turn off
the stove.
8. Stoves should be located so
that curtains or drapes will not
be blown into contact with heat
ing surfaces or open flames.
Determining Egg Shell
Quality Exact Science
Research has developed meth*
ods for determining mechanically!
nine of the 11 major factors which
comprise current concepts of
quality in shell eggs.
Egg size is determined by weigh
, ing the eggs as they are moved
on a conveyor. Egg shape de
termination requires only the ap
plication of known principles of
electronic accepting or rejecting
signals received from mechani
cal "feelers.” C*«ck detection is
accomplished through mechanical
tapping and "listening.”
Shell strength can be determined
by applying known stresses to
shells and accepting those undam
aged by the treatment. The worth
of this principle lies in its ability
to salvage weak-shelled eggs that
would ordinarily crack during
marketing and be lost. Air-cell
size is reflected with a high de
gree of accuracy by measuring
the absorption of radio-frequency
energy.
Presence of blood, presence of
Pseudomonas rots (commonly
called green rots), shell color and
yolk color can be detected—and
classified when necessary—by ap
propriate use of light transmitting,
reflecting or fluorescing proper
ties of the egg.
Stomach Parasites
\Mv
Veterinarians say prevention,
not treatment is proper approach
to blood-sucking parasites—only
10 of which per cow can cost
farmers $2 per head per year in
the cost of blood loss alone.
Symptoms: anemia, scours, loss 1
of appetite, emaciation, stagger
ing. Recommended prophylaxis:
mineral mixture in self-feeders
consisting of three parts each of
ground limestone, bone meal and
salt and one part of phcnothia
zine by weight.
SOIL CONSERVATION

Soil Conservationist
W. E. Beckham of the Perry com
munity, cooperating with the Oc
mulgee Soil Conservation District,
was assisted this spring in survey
ing and constructing 2,550 linear
feet of improved channel type ter
races.
After the field was terraced it
was planted to corn on the contour,
using the terraces as guide rows.
Land preparation, planting and
cultivating on the contour saves
tractor fuel and wear and tear on
farm machinery, and is a great help
in conserving soil and moisture.
District Cooperator R. E. Dunbar
of the Dunbar community has been
assisted by the District in making
necessary soils investigations, sur
veys, designs and construction of
a 313 foot farm pond dam. The im
pounded water will be used for
livestock purposes. Farm ponds
catch and store water that other
wise would run off to the creek
and be lost for farm use. They pro
vide water for livestock and in
some instances for Irrigation, and
for recreation and fish production.
Thomas A. Livingston of the
Elko community has been assisted
by the District in developing a
Basic Soil and Water Conservation
Plan for his farm. A Basic plan at
tempts to provide for the use of
the land in the farm according to
its capability and to treat the land
according to its needs for protec
tion and improvement. Since no
two farms, or for that matter, no
two fields on the same farm, are
exactly alike, each field must be
studied separately and plans made
| to treat it according to its particu
lar needs. However, the combined
] treatment for the entire farm must
be fitted together in such a manner
that a sound farming system will
result.
