calling it “another Phenix City."
“This is a low blow.” Walker
said, “and it hurt me. How many
of you think you’re living in a
Phenix City." We’ve got a good
town here and a good police force.
“I don’t know of anything I’ve
ever done wrong, unless it was go

the local draft board . . . that may,
have been wrong ... If there ever

MOORE DRY GOODS COMPANY, Perry, Ga. |
! haven for beer places because of
I a city law restricting their loca-
I tions, Walker said he has talked
to three city officials and they said
they had not heard any unusual
| number o f complaints about it.
1 (Mr. Dorriety said prostitution,
i gambling and drinking flourish on
Front Street.)
“Individuals Contribute”
Walker said he is getting contri
butions from individuals and Is
spending his own money to cam
paign for legal liquor. He said
"there Is an institute (Distilled
Spirits Institute, an association of
wholesale liquor dealers) which
“is glad to make a contribution” to
f the campaign. He said these men
- believe in operating legitimate
1 businesses and that they will help
1 i fight bootlegging in the county.
1 1 The young veteran said: “there’s
. nothing wrong with one drink, but
, don’t take the second and third
i and fourth. (He says he is a “tee
totaler.”) If you can’t drink it,
leave it alone.”
“The only way you can stop
drinking is to teach ’em right in
the home. If a man wants one, let
him have one, but don’t let him
have two. . . . This government
liquor don’t make a man crazy like
this moonshine does, it’s mean.”
Leaders of the Antl-Alcoholis i
Crusade of Houston county, who (
once indicated they would be at
the meeting, were not present.
Rally Later in Perry
Walker spoke from the platform
of one of his trucks. He was not
introduced, but simply started off
his talk with "Good afternoon,
ladies and gentlemen.”
He said he was “not alone” in
the fight for legal liquor. He
quoted from an article in a War
ner Robins newspaper in 1953 by
Recorder T. E. Brundege, who
called attention to bootlegging in i
the county and asked for the legal- f
izing of liquor. Mr. Brundege was i
not observed in the crowd.
[ Walker said he intends to hold !
j a similar rally in Perry later in
the campaign.
Walker said that signing the pe
-1 tition did not mean that you are
for liquor it means that you
believe the people ought to have
the right to vote.
The fight is shaping up between
Walker and Mr. Dorriety, the pas
tor of Walker’s church. He bap
tized Walker as a member of First
Baptist about a year ago. Mr. Dor
riety has preached against liquor
j several times since the petition
was prepared.
