By COOPER ETHERIDGE
DENTISTS: I told Frank Hol
land the other day I was on my
way to the dentist and lie said his
idea of hell is a place where
there’s no place to sit down but
dentists’ chairs,
i Some of my best friends are
dentists, but they’re all alike
they’ll hurt you.
They take you into this little
room and show you to a chair that
would be very comfortable in any
other setting. After trussing you
up with a lot of towels and Kleen
ex-es, they turn a spotlight in your
eyes. You are told that this helps
the dentists see into your mouth.
Actually, I think, it is to blind you
so you can’t see the note he writes
the bookkeeper about your bill.
While the dentists hums the
Moonlight Sonata, he locates five
or six yawning cavities that you
knew long ago were there. He acts
like he’s discovered something
wonderful. You knew they were
there all the time. Sure, you did.
Then he takes some pictures of
your mouth from several angles,
the chief angle being to get your
bill in such a shape that the den
tist will be in the upper bracket,
if you ever pay him. (These pic
tures cost you almost as much as
reprints of pictures in The Home
Journal.)
Having reassured you that he
will not hurt you, the dentists pro
ceeds to ask you whether you want
novacaine or want to see just how
much pain you can stand. You take
novocaine, not being the hero
type. Besides, you might just as
well get all that’s coming to you.
Knowing the strength of the no
vocaine he has just inserted in
your gum, the dentist knows you
don’t feel anything in the tooth
and he begins to show you what
people mean by saying, “blowing
your top.” While Doc drills clear
through the tooth and up in the
general vicinity of your hairline,
the patient has a tendency to
“tense up.” In fact, when he says
“that’s all,” you realize that you’ve
drawn yourself up into a little
knot, and you collapse out of
sheer joy.
Then he starts the procedure of
placing what must be several
thousands of dollars worth of
equipment and both his hands into
your mouth.
“If it hurts, raise your hand,”
the dentist says, knowing that
your mouth is so full of equipment
that you could not possibly tell
him anything.
After the grinding operation,
which clears a cavity larger than
the one you came with, the den
tist goes ahead in a business like
manner to fill the hole that he has
so painfully drilled. He takes out
the first investment in equipment
and puts in another set which
must also have taken quite a cap
ital inlay, no, outlay.
In addition to the clamps, gauze
and his two big cotton-picking
hands, he inserts a little gadget
with a crocked neck that’s sup
posed to draw off the saliva. Now
my saliva glands can lay dormant
for years between visits to the

dentist, but they wake up bright
eyed and bushy-tailed when I get
a lot of extraneous stuff in my
mouth in the dentist’s chair. At
first I didn’t think I was keeping
this little hose busy and feared
the whole system of tubes, pipes
and water pistols would be fouled
up. But after thinking about dill
pickles and lemons and stuff like
that I began to give the thing
quite a workout.
All this time the dental assist
ant is busily preparing the filling
in a small concrete mixer. The
dentist makes sure that she does
n’t get ahead of him and he crams
it into your mouth as fast as he
can. Somehow, it seems to come
out about even when he gets
through filling the cavities, and
there is very little waste.
<> The dentist then says, with feel
ing, “Well, that’s it,” and you get
ready to get the heck out of that
chair. What he means by that
phrase is that the cement has got
to set for a while, and he must go
out for a cup of coffee, because
you are sitting there with that,
hose in your face and can’t close
your mouth, and you wonder if a
whole new plate might not be the
best solution.
Finally he comes back and takes
off your wraps and gives you a
little card telling you when to
come back, which dims somewhat
your feeling of relief.
Our only consolation is that Dr.
C. E. Graham, the very fine local
dentist, is getting his appointment
cards printed at The Home Jour
nal. I am personally using up a
goodly number and he will have to
have some more printed soon, to
be ordered by his capable assist
ant, Mrs. Eleanor Boyer.
(There is some question about
whether this column should be
printed before I get my bill. Oh,
let it go, let’s live dangerously )
