This week has been set up as
Soil Conservation Week.
This is done so that all people
may stop and think of the soils of
our state and how we are treating
it Don’t you just take the attitude
that the soil was here before man
an d will be here when we are
cone. This is very easy to see that
year by year we are losing soil
that has been our main source of
income. Most of our soils have an
average of eight inches of top soil.
I wonder if you ever thought
just how many millions of years
that the process of soil formation,
plants growing, dying and return
ing to the soil as organic matter,
has been going on to produce this
eight inches of top soil. Then did
you ever see parts of fields, areas
around your homes disappear dur
ing heavy rains or heavy winds in
just a matter of minutes. Such
areas were stripped of the top soil
and nothing left but the hard clay
subsoil.
These are some of the things (
that we as citizens of our county,
state, and country should take no- (
tice and remember when we start ,
laying off rows in the spring that
run up and down each hill on the
farm, forget to keep the terraces
in good repair, removing soil nu
trients from the soils and not re
turning the same or more, neglect

Yes, I think all of us are guilty
of this. Soils of this country are
adapted to different types of crops
—relative to the different soil
type.
Many of you farmers have soil
maps of your farm that was made
by Soil Scientist—Do you use them
in planning your next years
crop? Do you even know where
they are? If not, why don’t you
dig them out and take a look at
your soil map' This soil map
should be the first step in plan

All of us are concerned with
conserving the soil. My job as
county agent is to relay informa
tion that our experiment stations
and other research work find aft
er testing whether good or bad i
to all the people.
The Colorado River carries on
an average 1,724 tons of sediment
per square mile of water surface,
but on the upper part where the
watershed is in mostly forest cov

square mile.
