PROCLAMATION
SOIL CONSERVATION WEEK
BY THE GOVERNOR:
WHEREAS: Georgia is one of the outstanding agricultural states of the
Union and many of our citizens gain their livelihood from the farms,
and
WHEREAS: Good soil is the first requisite for successful farming and efforts
are made at all time to preserve the best farm lands against the danger
of erosion, and
WHEREAS: We realize more and more the need of cooperation in move
ments to improve and protect our farm land and with the work of the
State Soil Conservation Committee and other groups engaged in this
movement, and
WHEREAS; Every person as a daily consumer of food, clothing, forest pro
ducts and other agricultural commodities has a vital stake in the success
of this work, now
THEREFORE: I, Marvin Griffin, Governor of Georgia, do hereby proclaim
the week September 11-18, 1955 as SOIL CONSERVATION WEEK in
Georgia and call on all our citizens to cooperate in every possible way
to aid this worthy movement which means so much to all our people.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, 1 have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal
of the Executive Department to be affixed. This 27th day of, July 1955.

We take this opportunity to ex
press our thanks to you for your
fine cooperation in the past in
helping us carry on the Soil Con
servation program in Houston
County, and to pledge our best ef
forts to assist you in the future
with your conservation problems.
Through the 1955 Agricultural
Conservation Program, the Feder
al Government will share with
Houston County farmers the cost
of carrying out approved conserva
tion practices. Information with
respect to the exact specifications
and rates of cost-sharing for such
practices, may toe obtained from
the County Committee Office.
The purpose of the program is
to help achieve additional conser
vation on land now in agricultur
al production.
Each farm operator is given the
opportunity to request that the
Federal Government share in the
cost of these practices on which
he considers he needs such assis
tance in order to permit their per
formance in adequate volume on
his farm. The County Committee,
taking into consideration the far
mer’s request shall direct the
available funds for cost-sharing to
those farms and to those practices
where cost-sharing is considered
most essential to the accomplish
ment of the basic conservation ob
jective of the Department, the use
of each acre of Agricultural land
within its capabilities and the
treatment of each acre in accord
ance with its needs for protection
and improvement.
Practices offered Houston Coun
ty farmers are: (1). Permanent
cover lnitial establishment of
permanent vegetative cover for
soil protection or as a needed land
use adjustment. (2). Liming crop
land lnitial treatment of crop
land by applying liming materials
to permit the use of legumes and
grasses for soil improvement and
protection. (3). Planting trees
Initial establishment of a stand of
loblolly pine, slash pine, longleaf
pine, shortleaf pine, white pine,
cedar, or hardwoods on farmland
for erosion control, watershed
protection, or forestry purposes.

This is the first step.

excess water, (trapezoidal ditches)
(13) Winter cover crops Estab
lishing acreages of winter le
gumes, ryegrass, rescue grass, or
small grains by seeding in the fall
of 1955 for winter protection from
erosion.

assistance to help develop a soil and water conservation pro
gram for your farm based on the Land Capability Map.
