PANTHERS LOSE
ONE AND WIN TWO
The Perry High School Panthers
ran into trouble with Heard Coun
ty here Friday night, but wallop
ed Hawkinsville on Thursday and
edged out Lanier Saturday night
for a 2-out-of-3 weekend.
Don Staples, brother of Perry
Coach Eric Staples, brought a
fired up ball team here Friday
night and outmanned the Pan
thers, 56 to 48. In Roy Aubrey,
who hit 26 points, Heard County
appears to have one of the best
ballplayers in Class B basketball
in Georgia. The Perry defense
simply could not contain him.
Heard County hit 52 per cent of
their shots while the Panthers had
a 38 per cent average.
Hawkinsville furnished little op
position Thursday night, Perry’s
second string playing more than a
half of the game. The Panthers
won, 71 to 21.
The going was rough in Macon’s
auditorium Saturday night. Twelve
minutes of the first half had gone
before Perry could get a field goal.
It seemed that Perry basket was
stuffed like a Christmas turkey. At
the end of the first quarter, Lanier
led by 9-3, but Perry did better in
the second quarter and brought
the score to 18-14 at the half. In
the second half, the Panthers ed
ged into the lead and held on as
the Lanierians missed enough free
throws to win the game.
Lanier’s Hugh Giles was high
scorer with 15 and Boot Hunt led
Perry with 17, followed closely
by Frank (Sputnik) Holland with
12. Francis Marshall led Perry in
the rebound department with 9.
Perry’s next game is with Haw
kinsville there on Jan. 2.

Police Chief Warns
Against Shooting
Firearms in City
Police Chief J. B. Hawkins to
day warned all parents to cooper
ate with him in seeing that their
children do not shoot any kind of
firearms in the city during the
holidays.
“We are having more complaints
now than we have had during any
Christmas season I can remem
ber,” Chief Hawkins said. “I can
not emphasize too strongly that it
is a violation of the law to shoot
any kind of weapon—Bß gun, shot
gun or rifle—inside the city li
mits.”
He reported that a boy, shooting
a .22 rifle, had killed a dog which
was waljdng between two small
girls. He said other reports of dan
gerous handling of firearms by
children have been received.
Where violations are reported,
he said, the gun will be impound
ed and the child will be taken in
to juvenile court for action.
“I want to make as strong an
appeal as possible,” Chief Haw
kins said, “to ask the cooperation
of the parents in not letting their
children shoot these guns in the
city. We will have to take drastic
action to stop the dangerous prac
tice.”
Journal Out Early
Christmas Week
This is a case of Thursday’s
news on Tuesday.
The Home Journal is not any
wackier than usual this week.
The IIJ folks arc just getting
out the Christinas issue two days
ahead of schedule for two good
reasons: to get the Christmas
greetings from the merchants to
our readers before Christmas,
and to get Friday and Saturday
off.
The week after this one the
old schedule will be resumed,
except for the Year holiday
Jan. 1.
Tournament Here
Will Open Monday;
Four-Team Exent
Although the four-team tourna
ment scheduled here Dec. 29 and
30 is “an experimental tourna
ment,” there will be the same
competition expected in a Middle
Georgia high school basketball
battle.
Perry, Vienna, Cochran and
Warner Robins will battle it out
for two nights to see what kind of
game would result if the Georgia
High School Association decides to
outlaw the zone defense and estab
lish the 24-second possession rule.
Perry’s spacious new gymnasium
probably will resound with cries of
“shoot, shoot” when the 24-second
clock ticks away, for a team will
be required to make an attempt
for a basket within 24 seconds or
lose possession.
The GHSA has approved the
tournament as an experiment with
the two proposed rule changes,
plus allowing two free shots for
all fouls committed in “back
court.”
The old zone defense, said by
many to slow up the game, might
be outlawed by the GHSA. The
zone defense often becomes a
tight circle under the basket and
forces the offensive team to shoot
from the outside. This takes out of
the game the “driving” lay-up
shots.
Statistics will be kept on how
many times the teams lose the ball
for holding beyond the 24 seconds,
how many times “zone defense”
gives the ball to the other side,
and how many times back court
fouls give the teams the two free
throws.
Perry gets into the tournament
at 9 p. m. Monday, meeting Warn
er Robins, while Vienna and Coch
ran will open the event with a
game at 7:30 Monday. The losers
will play each other at 7:30 the
next night and the winners will
play at 9. All four teams will re
ceive trophies for their participa
tion.
Season tickets will not be good
for the tournament.
Most Stores Open
In Perry on Friday
Most Perry stores will be open
the day after Christmas, but a few
will be closed.
The Perry Loan and Savings
Bank and the post office will be
open.
Mr. and Mrs. Earle Smith Sr.
spent Monday and Tuesday in Au
burn, Alabama visiting Mr. and
Mrs. E. P. Smith.
