LANES BEING MARKED TO ACCELERATE
AND DECELERATE ON NEW HIGHWAYS
Acceleration lanes? Decelera
tion lanes? What are they?
These are new terms in Georgia
highway lingo which are being
ushered in with the Interstate Sys
tem. An acceleration lane is an
extra lane provided at an inter
. change ramp to give a motorist
coming onto the highway suffici
i ent space in which to increase his
; speed to that comparable with
• highway traffic before entering
j the stream of through traffic.
• Conversely, a deceleration lane
• is an extra lane provided for the
[ driver to reduce his speed upon
approaching an exit ramp, without
interfering with through traffic.
The first such lanes on Georgia’s
Interstate System have been con
structed on Interstate 85, and the
State Highway Department has re
cently emplaced pavement mark
ings at these points to guide the
motorist in the correct use of
change-of-speed lanes. Since these
markings will eventually be found
at all interchanges on the Inter
state Highway System in Georgia,
it is important for every driver to
become thoroughly familiar with
their meaning. ,
Markings Installed
The new markings consist of the
standard yellow and white lines
presently in use throughout the
Georgia highway system. They
were installed last Thursday at
each entrance and exit on the
Northeast Expressway at which
change-of-speed lanes are provid
ed. These markings have the same
meaning as is common throughout
to pay expenses incident thereto.

the state road system. That is, a
change of lanes is permitted at
any point where the motorist is
flanked by a broken white line;
and no lane-changing is permissi
ble when he is flanked by a solid
yellow “barrier line”, the standard
“no-passing’ line.
Specifically, this is how the new
change-of-lane marking system
will affect the driver. When he
nears the point at which he wants
to leave the expressway, he will
notice the pavement widening out
on his right. After a short taper,
it will become a full-width extra
lane, extending to a direct con
nection with the ramp leading off
the expressway. The driver should
use this extra lane to reduce speed
for a safe exit on the off-ramp, so
that his decreasing speed will not

interfere with Expressway traffic.
“Slow-Down” Lane :
The pavement markings for the!
deceleration lanes indicate to the!
motorist that he is already adja
cent to the deceleration, or “slow
down”, lane. As long as he is
flanked on his right by a broken
white line, he may still cross over
and utilize this lane for leaving
the expressway; but once he reach
es the solid yellow line, there will
not be sufficient room to permit a
safe crossover. The motorist
should then drive on to the next
exit, for safety’s sake.
Once inside the deceleration
lane, the driver will notice a solid
yellow line to his left. This yellow
“barrier line” means that he
should not attempt to re-enter the
expressway traffic, as to do so
would endanger the safe flow of
through traffic.
The markings for the accelera
tion lane, or the lane provided for
entrance to the expressway, are
somewhat different. First, the pre
sence of these markings will indi
cate that an extra lane is provided
for him to use in attaining a speed
comparable to that of the express
way traffic. When the driver
comes alongside a broken white
line, and, if there is a break in
the stream of traffic on the ex
pressway, he may safely cross over
into the through lane. As soon as
these markings stop, he must ei
ther cross into the through lane
immediately or prepare to stop,
because the ending of the mark
ings indicates that the extra lane
is about to dead-end.
Here Are the Rules
Simply stated, the motorist
should remember the old rules:
1. Change lanes over broken
white line only;
2. Do not change lanes over
solid yellow lines; and should add
two additional rules:
1. Try to enter the deceleration,
or slow-down, lane before reach
ing the markings, if possible; and
definitely before reaching the so
lid yellow barrier line;
2. Leave the acceleration, or
speed up lane, as soon as possible
after entering the zone marked by
the broken white line, and pre
pare to stop if he hasn’t been able
to enter the expressway traffic
flow soon after the markings have
terminated.
