THE MARTIN BOYS: Not long
ago we did a piece about “The
Gray Boys” of Perry basketball
fame.
There was another set of bas
ketball players “The Martin
Boys” who furnished plenty of
athletic ability to Perry basketball
Coaches Jim Gooden and Eric Sta-
I pies.
The sons of W. W. Martin, now
of Warner Robins, and the late
Mrs. Martin, “The Martin Boys”
played on dirt courts in the earli
er days and the younger boys play
ed in Perry’s old wooden gym.
The oldest is L. W. Martin, now
a physician at Sebring, Fla. He
did not play here, but played some
for the University of Georgia
around 1920, before the Martin
family moved from Adairsville to
Perry.
Next was Ralph Martin, now in
the insurance and real estate bu
siness at Fort Myers, Fla. He was
of the “dirt court” era and Jim
Gooden was the coach. He was a
standout on one of Mr. Gooden’s
early teams.
The No. 4 son is Wilson Martin,
now associated with Gray-Walker
Tractor Company here. He was a
member of the Perry team that
went to the Cotton States Tourna
ment back around 1930. He is the
father of Wilson Jr. and Lee Mar
tin, who play for the current edi
tion of the Perry Panthers.
The No. 3 boy in the line of six
is Herman Martin, a dentist in
Sebring, Fla. He and Wilson play
ed at the same time, with Herman
on the starling five and Wilson on
the second string. Herman went to
Oglethorpe, where he played bas
ketball and baseball.
No. 5 down the line was J. M.
(Pepper) Martin, now a physician
in Augusta. Pepper seemed to
have been harvested before he was
ripe—he was about 5’ 4” when he
graduated. In high school he used
to go through the legs of the tall
est players of the opposition and
generally demoralized the enemy,
much to the enjoyment of the
fans. He later won the hearts of
Mercer University fans with the
same kind of antics. Despite some
clowning, he was a solid ballplay
er.
The last of the Martin boys was
Allen Martin, now a dentist at Mel
bourne, Fla., who was one of the
outstanding players Perry ever
had. He was about 6’ 2” and had
the agility of a much smaller man.
He went on to play for Mercer,
where he was an outstanding point
maker.
There was one girl to cope with
six boys, Mrs. Donald McLeod,
now of Atlanta.
That’s the story of “The Martin
Boys”. Wilson Jr. and Lee may be
starting another chapter of Perry
basketball history, the chapter to
be headed “The Martin Boys,
Part II.”
GRIGGS STILL HERE: Harry
Griggs, concrete block maker, says
since he decided to move his block
plant to Cochran Field, people
have the mistaken impression that
he is not contracting to bui’d an;
more houses here. Nothing cou .
be farther from the truth, he says.
He hopes to continue buildin
homes in Perry for many years.
SONG; There's a pop ilar tun,
that goes; “1 found my thrill, on
Blueberry Hill,” but the moder
homeowner sings it this way: “i
found my bill, on Mortgagor Hill. ’
INFLATION is not confined U.
money. It also affects the opinion
some people have of themselves.
And there scorns to be no defla
tion.
