LOCAL
BUSINESS
i
BY BYRON MAXWELL
One of the best testimonies to
the power of the press is the con
stant effort of some commercial j
firms to get free space in the news
section of the paper.
A great deal of publicity mater
ial—which is obviously an effort
to get free advertising—finds its
way to the editor’s waste basket.
Such must be the case if the news
paper is to survive as a private
business and as a community ser-1
vice.
No newspaper could meet its
j payroll if it opened its news col
umns to free “puffs” for every en
terprise in town. And furthermore,
the newspaper could not retain
the respect and confidence of the
public if the news columns be
came diluted with free-riding ad
vertising.
Most business men realize that
a newspaper would destroy itself
if it did not make a sharp distinc
tion between news and advertising.
A fair-minded merchant does not
try to finagle free advertising any
more than he would try to worm
free advice from a lawyer or a
doctor. For, it is to the advantage
of business to help maintain a
community newspaper which com
mands the respect and confidence
of the public.
When a newspaper degenerates
into nothing more than a publicity
organ, it can not retain paid sub
scribers. And, eventually it be
comes worthless as an advertising
medium.
It is paid circulation, reflecting
the confidence of the public in the
integrity of a newspaper, which
makes advertising effective. A
foresighted business man would
not destroy the qualities which
make the newspaper his most re
liable advertising outlet. Every ed
itor solicits bonafide news of the
business institutions of his com
munity. But when he treats ad
vertising as news, the editor com
mits professional suicide, and acts
against the welfare of the entire
community.

Mike Jacobs won first, Andy Tal
ton, second and Earl Cheek third.
The purpose of this contest is to
bring to the attention of FFA
members and their advisors the
importance of winter grazing in
the economical production of live
stock. The individual members are
judged on the selection of plot,
seeding, plant and species, ferti
lizer and lime, soil analysis, man
agement and utilization, and scope.
The district judges from Tifton
will visit these plots this week for
official placing in the district
finals.
