Perry Girl’s Picture on Million Leaflets
To lie Distributed in State Chancer Fight
A symbolic “Family of Hope”
, against cancer will reign over the
, American Cancer Society’s 1959
, Education-Funds Crusade in Geor
; gia.
A successful businessman, an at
tractive mother, a charming young
girl, a five-year-old boy—all hav
ing won personal victories over
' cancer —will symbolize the 16,000
Georgians who are alive today,
cured of cancer because they got
to their doctors in time for early
, detection and prompt, proper
treatment to save them from need
less cancer death. Also, they sym
. bolize the American Cancer Socie
ty’s 1959 Crusade slogan, "Guard
Your Family—Fight Cancer With
a Checkup and a Check.”
This announcement was made
today by Arthur L. Montgomery,
president of Atlanta Coca-Cola
Bottling Co. and state chairman of
the Cancer Crusade. The Crusade
will be held during April, which
has been proclaimed as “Cancer
1 Control Month” by both President
Eisenhower and Gov. Ernest Van
diver.
One Million Leaflets
Mr. Montgomery said a picture
of the symbolic family would ap
pear on the one-million education
leaflets to be distributed through
out Georgia during the Crusade,
and that the members would ap
pear at Crusade meetings and
events over the state.
Members of the symbolic “Fam
ily of Hope” are A. W. Speer,
Mrs. E. H. Buck, five-year-old De-
Witt T. Segler Jr., all of Macon,
and 12-year-old Sandra Reynolds
of Perry,
j Mr. Speer, who is 38 years old,
I was treated for cancer in May,
1953. He is the manager of a large
super market, and in addition to
being a “back yard chef,” he finds
pleasure in watching baseball and
football. He has two children,
James Ronald, 9, and Deborrah
Jane, 7.
Mrs. Buck was successfully
treated for cancer in 1950. She has
a 24-year old son, Edwin H. Buck
Jr. Active in both business and
civic affairs, Mrs. Buck is presi
dent and treasurer of Buck Fi
nance Co., has served as president
of Middle Georgia Girl Scouts,
treasurer of League of Women Vo
ters, and is now serving as mass
media co-chairman for the Bibb
County Unit, American Cancer So- ;
ciety. Her hobbies include bridge
and dancing.
No Signs of Recurrance
DeWitt, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
DeWitt T. Segler Sr., is the only
member of the symbolic family
who is not a “cured cancer pa
tient.” He was treated for cancer
in March, 1955, and his doctor said
there had been no signs of recur- ■
ranee of the disease since. Mr.
Montgomery pointed out that a
cancer patient is considered “cur
ed” when there has been no sign
of recurrance for at least five i
years after treatment. DeWitt has
two sisters, Delores, 11, and De
borah Ann, 3.
Sandra, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest Reynolds, was success
fully treated for cancer when she
was only two and one-half years
old. As “Miss Georgia Cancer Cru- j
sader of 1958,” she served as the j
symbol of last year’s Cancer Cru
sade in Georgia. She represented
Georgia at the first National Cured
Cancer Congress in Washington,
D. C., and appeared at Crusade |
meetings and on radio and tele- 1
vision throughout Georgia. She is,
in the seventh grade in school and j
among her hobbies are playing!

These four members of different Georgia families will serve as
the symbolic “Family of Hope” against cancer for the American
Cancer Society’s 1959 Education-Funds Crusade in Georgia. Each
having won a personal victory over cancer, they symbolize the
16,000 Georgians who are alive today, cured of cancer. Also, they
symbolize the 1959 Crusade slogan, “Guard Your Family—Fight
Cancer with a Checkup and a Check.” Left to right, they are A. W.
Speer, Sandra Reynolds, Mrs. E. H. Buck and DeWitt T. Segler, Jr.
All are from Macon except Miss Reynolds, who is from Perry.
ball. She was awarded a special
citation for her volunteer work
with the Cancer Society last year.
Emphasizing the “Guard Your
Family” theme, Mr. Montgomery
pointed out that cancer is predict
ed to strike in two out of every
three homes.
