New Vet Division
Office for Area
A new Eastman-Hawkinsville Di
vision, to serve veterans in a five
county area, was established ef
fective March 31, Pete Wheeler,
director of the State Department
of Veterans Service, announced to
day.
Consolidation of the Eastman
and Hawkinsville offices is part of
a reorganization program invol
ving field offices throughout the
state and the central office in At
lanta, Wheeler said.
Wheeler said the reorganization
will effect a budget reduction of
about SBO,OOO a year.
Since last December, six field
offices already had been combined
into three new divisions.
The new Eastman-Hawkinsville
Division, will serve Dodge, Pulas
ki, Wilcox, Houston and Bleckley
counties.
Dessie Thomas, who has been in
charge of the Eastman field office
of the State Deaprtment of Veter
ans Service for four years, will
continue as field manager of the
new division.
Thomas, a native of Dodge coun
ty, is a veteran of World War I,
and has been active in veterans
organizations, the Masons, and
Elks.
The Eastman office will contin
ue on its present schedule of 8:30
a. m. to 4:30 p. m.; Monday
through Friday.
The Hawkinsville field office
will continue on its present sche
dule of 8:30 a. m. to 4:30 p. m ,
Monday through Thursday.
Mr. Thomas also will be in
charge of service in the Cochran,
Rochelle, and Perry office.
Mrs. Joyce Whigam will remain
as secretary in the Hawkinsville
office.
The annual hospital bill for can
cer patients is approximately S3OO
million and the loss in goods and
services amounts to some sl2 bil
lion a year. Help cut down this
terrible toll. Give to the American
Cancer Society’s 1959 Crusade.

with the fleet.
OKINAWA Marine Cpl.
Claude R. McElmurray, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe L. McElmurry of
1107 Fourth, Perry, Ga. is serving
with “C” Company, First Battalion
of the Third Marine Division on
the island of Okinawa in the Far
East.
Members of the Company took
part in a five-day 100-mile march
last month.
