FFA Wins Honors
In Farm Safety
The Perry chapter was recogniz
ed as one of the top two chapters
in District I in farm safety for the
year 1959-60. There is no district
winner and both the Edison chap
ter and the Perry Chapter will re
present District I in the FFA
state farm safety contest.
The Perry chapter during the
past year inspected 180 farm
homes for fire hazards, painted all
the power tools in the local agri
culture department according to
the latest safety color coding, es
tablished a safety file in the chap
ter, exhibited safety exhibits at
fairs, carnivals, and meetings, plus
many other things too numerous
to mention.
One of its most important acti
vities was the sponsoring of Na
tional Farm Safety Week. During
that week the members of the Per
ry Chapter presented two radio
programs on farm safety, used ap
proximately 70 minutes of radio
time with safety spot announce
ments, displayed 125 National
Farm Safety Week posters, dis
played 582 Safety Week stickers,
displayed 600 Safety Week guides,
used mats in the various newspa
pers in our area, published vari
ous articles on Farm Safety, and
reached approximately 10,000 peo
ple.
Every member established a
home safety library and a safety
library was established at school.
Various bulletins and publications
were distributed to the members
and other people in the surround
ing communities. Approximately
10,000 pieces of safety literature
were ordered by the chapter and
numerous films on farm safety
were shown to the chapter and
other students. The chapter esti
mated that during the year ap
proximately 50,000 people were
reached by this program in the
Middle Georgia Area.

Perry Girl Sees
State Education
Set-up in Atlanta
Miss Mabel Hunt, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Barnett Hunt of Per
ry, was an important visitor to the
State Department of Education re
cently.
The pretty Perry High School
junior had just been elected state
superintendent of schools in the
Girls’ State elections in Athens.
She went to Atlanta with her fel
low state officers to be sworn into
office by Judge Henry Duckworth
of the Georgia Supreme Court.
She was greeted by Dr. Claude
Purcell, state superintendent of
schools, who congratulated her
warmly on her election. Dr. Pur
cell showed her the schedule of
his busy week, which included at
tending PTA convention, the legis
lative committee hearing, the
State Convention of the Georgia
Vocational Association, and a doz
en and one other meetings, besides
the regular routine business of his
office.
He pointed out to her the stack
of mail upon his desk and told
her that the Department gets sev
en bags of mail a day.
The chief state school officer
and the newly elected teen-age
superintendent of schools walked
through the State Department of
Education and met the officials
who have a part in running the
Department.
Miss Hunt saw the big enter
prise which is one of Georgia’s
most vast organizations. She heard
of the 200 million dollar state and
local school budget and learned
something of how it is spent, most
ly for teacher salaries.
Bidding goodbye to the man who
really holds the office to which
she was elected in Girls’ State, she
siad, “You have a big job.”
Miss Hunt, a talented music stu
dent, is one of the most popular
high school students in Perry.
