* p BY 'Jh&ftldluHM'
From Ed A. Seaton, Summit
City, Calif.; I recall how the
sinking of the battleship Maine
caused a sudden wave of war
hysteria throughout the country.
Soon war was declared and we
kids begged to be taken. When
turned down with a laugh, we had
to content ourselves with fighting
imaginary Spaniards. We ranged
up and down the railroad track
where there were plenty of small
stones, pelting at fence posts,
telegraph poles and insulators,
counting each hit a dead Span
iard. We especially wanted to get
a crack at their king, young Al
phonso, a fair match, we thought,
for us to meet up with.
Unemployment was so rife that
with a call for volunteers, boys
and young men rushed in by the
thousands. Our little town re
cruited a full company in almost
nothing flat. The band played, old
civil war veterans spouted fervid
patriotism, the ladies and girls
shed tears and waved handker
chiefs; everybody cheered and
stomped as the boys marched in
straggly unison to the station and
boarded a night train for Indiana
polis.
A few days later the group
filtered back, humiliated and
crest-fallen. The quota had al
ready been exceeded and there
was no place in the army for our
valiant fighters.
Soon came the news of Admiral
Dewey’s tremendous victory in
Manila Harbor. Dewey could have
been acclaimed king or most any
honor he would have wanted for
a while. The subsequent war news
was well sprinkled with instances
where a crop of babies was getting
the name of Dewey.

A FALLACY ABOUT MEAT
Miss Nelle Boyd, nutritionist
Agricultural Extension Service’
says it is a fallacy that meat burns
its own calories. The calories from
meat are used by the body just as
those from any other foods. The
purpose of high protein foods
such as meat, is to build and main
tain tissues and provide warmth
and energy for the body, she says.
