Perry Will Consider Public Housing
Mayor Milton Beckham said at the City Council meeting
the other night that he wanted to take issue with our recent
statement that “the people who control politics” opposed pub
lic housing in Perry.
He said he could not be placed on the side “for” or
“against” public housing because he had not been mayor but
six months and the matter had not been discussed since he
took office. He was right; he hasn’t taken a stand either for
or against it because it simply has not been discussed.
The mayor said the Planning Commission, which was
formed by Mayor and Council last week, will determine whe
ther Perry needs any public housing or not, and that it will
be considered after the necessary surveys are made.
Councilman H. E. Weems Jr. said he doesn’t believe in
public housing just for the sake of saying the city has public
housing. He said he believes in the kind of public housing
which replaces and removes sub-standard housing, whenever
private enterprise fails to do its civic duty in this regard.
Councilman Bill Bates said he is opposed to any type
public housing because he thinks housing is the business of
private enterprise.
Councilman D. K. Roughton said he is opposed to any
type public housing where the federal government is furnish
ing the money because the federal government will mix the
races in the housing developments.
Other councilmen did not express themselves on the
subject.
We were asked to say who the “people who control poli
tics” are.
We replied that Perry seems to be no different from any
other city, county, state or country—that “the people who
control the money” are “the people who control politics”.
Money controls just about everything, including politics, in
Perry, as it does all over the world.

Watch Out for Anger While Driving
The other day we overheard a driver telling about a fool
motorist who cut in front of him, how he had to slam on his
brakes, narrowly missing a collision.
“One of these days,” he said, “I’m gonna let one of those
guys have it!”
Maybe you can’t blame a fellow from getting angry at some
of the fool stunts pulled on the streets. But no matter what,
you’ve always got to keep that temper of yours in hand. Don’t
ever let it take over.
Anger and horsepower don’t mix. You can’t drive with a
chip on your shoulder. When your anger flares you are very
apt to act recklessly and an accident can easily occur.
Remember, “anger” is just one letter short of “danger”.
Keep calm . . . and you’ll keep out of an accident.
