| In Work in Farm Safety Program
BY EARL CHEEK
Perry FFA Reporter
T. D. Brown, Executive Secre
| tary of' the Georgia Association of
\ FFA, notified the Perry FFA that
\ the chapter had been selected as
i first place winner in the state
i Farm Safety program for the past
year’s accomplishments. This
award will be made at the an
nual state convention to begin
July 18 at the state FFA-FHA
camp on Lake Jackson.
Walton Wood, FFA Senior, ser
ved as chairman of the chapter
safety committee. Other members
of the committee were Chuck
White, Verlon Bell, Marvin Ragan,
Riley Hunt and Ronnie Harper.
Each class also had a safety chair
man.
The following is a narrative sum
mary of the chapter activities for
the 1959-60 school year: Since
Farm Safety affects the lives of
every Future Farmer in the Per
ry Chapter, members of the execu
tive committee felt that this
should be one of the major activi
ties for the year. In May of 1959,
tentative plans were made to ini
tiate a safety program. For the
summer months, water safety,
safety on the roads, and safety in
operating power equipment were
stressed. During the observance of
National Farm Safety Week, the
safety committee outlined a com
prehensive program of activities.
Posters and exhibits were placed
in 30 downtown stores and 95 pos
ters were placed throughout the
county in nine different communi
ties. Radio programs, spot an
nouncements, safety stamps, news
paper articles, windshield stickers
were used to reach the people dur
ing safety week.
At the beginning of the new
school year last fall, the Safety
Committee set up a complete pro
gram of activity for the entire
year. A safety committee was set
up in each class to handle the
program for the year. It was felt
that as many people as possible
should be made safety conscious
and then encouraged to to do
something to promote safety.
Outstanding achievements for
the year were showing thirty safe-

ty films to chapter members and
other groups. Ten thousand pieces 1
of safety publications were order-!
ed and distributed to approximate- j
: ly four thousand people. A Safety 1
1 float was featured in the Home- 1
s coming parade. Safety exhibits
were placed at Fairs, FFA Leader- ;
1 ship meeting, PT A carnival,
s school and other locations. All
members of the chapter began a
safety library for home use.
Members of the chapter color 1
conditioned the school shop equip
ment and shop. All equipment was
r painted according to recommenda
? tions of safety experts. Protective
devices were provided to protect
J’ members using power equipment.
'* All hand tools were also painted.
In the transportation field, mem
bers studied highway regulations,
built truck bodies, adjusted brakes
r and displayed safety stickers. The
® handling of flammable materials
'* and chemicals were studied during!
the year.
Chapter members made farm |
, s safety surveys using the check
I* sheet developed by the National
.’ Youth Farm Fire Safety program.
1 ‘ A farm wiring clinic, welding clin
e ic, and fencing clinic were held in
’’ the adult program.
e It was estimated that at least
f 50,000 people were reached
e through the Perry FFA chapter
educational program in safety.
