Whereas, heretofore, on Decem
ber 9, 1959, James W. Maddox and
Mrs. James W. Maddox did exe- j
cute to Biltwell Homes, Inc., a cer
tain Security Deed to the follow
ing land:
Original land lot No. 213 in the
Lower Fifth Land District of
Houston County, State of Georgia,
and being Lot No. 6 of Block “L”
of Robin View Subdivision, ac
cording to a revised plat thereof
as made by T. L. Ellis, Surveyor,
and as appears of record in the
Office of Clerk of Superior Court,
Houston County, State of Georgia.
Said Lot No. 6 fronts on the East
side of a forty foot Street and
measures a total frontage on said
Street of 70 feet, and extends back
in uniform width 163 feet deep.
Said land faces the East side of
Main Street. Reference is made to
the record of said plat for a more
detailed description of said pro
perty above described,
in Houston County, Georgia, to
secure a note of even date there
with for $5577.00, all as shown by
a Security Deed recorded in the I
Office of the Clerk of the Superior
Court of Houston County, Georgia,
in Book No. 148, pages 157-58; and

the said Builtwell Homes, Inc. con
veyed to the undersigned the said
note, the said Security Deed and
the said land described therein;
and
Whereas, said note has become
in default as to interest, and the
i undersigned elects that the en
tire note, principal and interest,
become due at once;
Now Therefore, according to the
original terms of said Security
Deed and the laws in such cases
made and provided, the undersign
ed will expose for sale to the high
est and best bidder for cash the
above described land, after proper
advertisement, on the first Tues
day in August, 1960, between the
legal hours of sale before the
Courthouse door in Houston Coun
ty, Georgia. The proceeds from
said sale will be used, first to the
payment of said note, principal,
interest and expenses, and the bal
ance, if any, delivered to the said
James W. Maddox and Mrs. James
W. Maddox.

Key to New FFA-FHA Building
Keys to the new Georgia Power Company education
building at the state FFA-FHA camp at Jackson
Lake are presented by John J. McDonough, power
company president, to Jo Evelyn Whitfield, state
FHA president, and Jimmy Granade, who is state
vice president of the FFA. The ceremony took place
during the recent dedication of the new $50,000 struc
ture. The building was constructed under the power
company’s sponsorship, with the State of Georgia
matching the company’s contribution of $25,000.

Restaurants probably have as
much to gain from advertising as
any kind of business. The famed
restaurant chains owe their suc
cess to advertising backed by good
service. Generally, however, inde
pendent restaurants do not make
full use of the possibilities of
advertising.
What can happen when a single \
restaurant turns to advertising can (
be seen in the success of the
Friendship House on the Mississip
pi Gulf Coast. The Friendship
House was established just ten !
years ago in a highly competitive ’
vacation area, ]
The new restaurant faced com- ;
petition with long-established pres- ;
tige in a trade where the custo
mer does not like to take a chance \
with new firms. To meet this dis- \
ficult situation. Friendship House I
became one of the largest adver
tisers on the Gulf Coast.
As a result, in a relatively
short time, the restaurant has be-|
come a leader in prestige and in
come. It now serves more meals
than any restaurant in Mississippi,
and continues to lead all Gulf
Coast restaurants in advertising.
Restaurants, like other types of
service business, are sometimes
slow to recognize the value of ad
vertising because the nature of
the potential market is not always
apparent.
In times of prosperity, the great
est opportunity for the expansion
of a service business is not by
drawing from the competition.
New custimers who were not pre
viously utilizing the service are
the best prospects, and their num
ber is unlimited.
Any person seeking a more
pleasant life is always a prospec
tive customer for a good restau
rant. But until advertising changes
his habits he may continue to
overwork his wife and spend his
money on an entirely different
kind of service.
AN ORDINANCE TO ESTABLISH
A MUNICIPAL PLANNING
COMMISSION FOR THE CITY
OF PERRY, GA.
An Ordinance to Provide for the
Perry Planning Commission and to
Repeal All Ordinances in Conflict
Herewith.
Be it ordained by the City Coun
cil of the City of Perry, Georgia,
in order to guide and accomplish
a coordinated and harmonious de
velopment of the municipality
which will, in accordance with
existing and future needs, best
promote the public health, safety,
morals, order, convenience, pros
perity, and the general welfare, as
well as efficiency and economy
in the process of development,
that the Perry Planning Commis
sion, hereinafter referred to as
the Planning Commission, is here
by created and established as au
thorized by the General Planning
and Zoning Enabling Act of 1957
(Act No. 358 as amended) and
said Planning Commission shall be
organized and empowered as fol
lows:
Section 1. Membership. The
Planning Commission shall con
sist of five members, who shall be
residents of the City of Perry,
Georgia, appointed by the City
Council of the City. The terms of
the members shall be for four
years, except that in the appoint
ment of the first Planning Com
mission under the terms of this
ordinance, the first member shall
be appointed for a term of one
year, the second member shall be
appointed for a term of two years,
the third member shall be appoint
ed for a term of three years, and
the remaining members shall be
appointed for terms of four years
each. Any vacancy in membership
shall be filled for the unexpired
term by the City Council who shall
also have the authority to remove
any member for cause, on written
charges, after a public hearing.
All members shall serve without
compensation but may be reim
bursed for actual expenses incur
red in connection with their offi
cial duties.
Section 2. Organization, Rules,
Staff and Finances. The Planning
Commission shall elect its Chair
man from among its members. The
term of the Chairman shall be one
year with eligibility for re-elec
tion. The Planning Commission
shall appoint a Secretary, who may
be an officer or employee of the
municipality. The Planning Com
mission shall make its own rules
of procedure and determine its
time of meeting. All meetings of
the Planning Commission at which
official action is taken shall be
open to the public and all records
of the Planning Commission shall
be a public record.
The Planning Commission may
appoint such employees and staff
as it may deem necessary for its
work and may contract with the
State Planning Agency and city
planners and other consultants for
such services as it may require.
The expenditures of the Planning
Commission, exclusive of gifts,
shall be within the amounts ap
propriated for the purpose by the
City Council.
Section 3. Powers and Duties.
From and after the time when the
Planning Commission shall have
organized and selected its officers
and shall have adopted its rules
of procedure, then said Plannnig
Commission shall have all the pow
ers, duties and responsibilities set
forth in the General Planning and
Zoning Enabling Act of 1957 (Act
No. 358 as amended).
Section 4. Be It Further Ordain

Funeral Conducted
For Carl A. Webb

Funeral services for Carl A. ,
Webb, 59, of Marshallville Road,
were held Friday at 11 a. m. in
the chapel of Gardner Watson
Funeral Home here, with Rev. ‘
Frank Perry officiating. Burial
was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Webb died late Wednesday
at the Macon County Clinic in
Montezuma. j
A native of Moreland, Ga., Mr. ]
Webb had for some years been a
livestock farmer. He was a mem
ber of Moreland Masonic Lodge
and moved to Perry 11 years ago '
from Woodbine, Ga. 1
Survivors include his wife, the
former Annie Mae Regin; his mo
ther, Mrs. Josie Webb, Moreland; I
four sisters, Mrs. Leon Murphy, 1
Moreland, Mrs. B. E. Jackson, i
Newnan, Mrs. Pete Millans, Col
lege Park, Mrs. Cecil Groover,
East Point; three brothers, Ira
Webb, Clairmont, Fla., John Webb,
Moreland, and Ray Webb, La-

Bridge Timbers
Good for 75 Years
Workmen demolishing the old
Ocmulgee River highway bridge at
Hawkinsville recently were amaz
ed to find heavy timbers support
ing the massive brick piers were
still sound after having been sub
merged on the river floor for more
than 75 years.
John Dickinson of Milledgeville,
assistant forester of the Georgia
Forestry Commission’s Sixth Dis
trict, which includes this area,
said the timbers were solid heart

G. W. Daniels, Hawkinsville citi
zen who became interested some
time ago in the history of the old
bridge, pointed out that the 14 by
14 inch timbers ranging from 12
to 20 feet in length were placed on
the rock bed of the river back in
the 1880’s to form a foundation
for the bridge’s piers.
Daniels, who noted that wood
preservatives were unknown back
in those days, said he and others
have speculated the timbers would
have possibly lasted a thousand
years under water if left undis
turbed.
The bridge was demolished af
ter the state highway department
recently completed a modern dou
ble span a short distance up
stream.
