Soil Conservation
I Houston
1 B
County
BY JACK C. MILLER
Soil Conservationist
——— ■— r ».«
As Autumn approaches . . . and
you would never know it from this
hot, muggy weather and all these
; billions of gnats swarming around
... and summer crops are being
cleared from the fields, Houston
farmers, cooperating with their
Ocmulgee Soil Conservation Dis
trict, are stepping up their pro
gram of applying soil and water
conservation practices on their
farms.
These practices, when establish
will control soil erosion, save soil,
conserve water, increase and main
tain soil fertility, and improve the
farm as a place to live and work.
Practices needed on each Coop
erator’s farm is contained in his
Conservation Farm Plan which he
developed with the assistance of
the District. The District provides
technical services to assist the
Cooperator in planning, applying
and maintaining his Conservation
Program.
Last week a start was made in
assisting District Cooperator C. T.
Kersey of the Henderson commun
ity in planning, surveying and con
structing terraces on another 75
acres of cropland on his farm west
of Henderson. Charlie has already
constructed several miles of ter
races this year, adding to the ter
races he has constructed in pre
vious years.
Quite a number of our cooper
ators have already requested as
sistance to build terraces this Fall
and Winter, and the requests con
tinue to come in. It appears now
that they will construct many
miles of terraces before crop plant
ing time next spring.
Terraces will help you control
erosion on your sloping cropland.
If interested let us know . . be
glad to help.

THESE ROADS IGNORE FATHER TIME!
Modern concrete will last
50 years and more!
Reports from state after state show that concrete pavements have
outlasted other types 2 to 1. The new roads will do even better!
Fifty years from now, cars will still be rolling smoothly on this
same concrete. Same surface, too ~. not resurfaced 4or 5 times.
Concrete grows stronger with age. Other paving materials act
just the opposite. Sun, rain, freezing can’t hurt concrete.
That’s why it stays flat and smooth riding—doesn’t get rippled
and wavy. That’s why upkeep costs are as much as 60% lower
than for asphalt.
And concrete means a skid-resistant pavement,
one that lets you see better at night. Write No P a s ement could be stronger
