Club Council Making Real Progress on Recreational Park Here
A report of real progress in
development of a recreational
park and a suggestion that Perry
hire a recreational director fea
tured the annual meeting of the
Perry Club Council at the New
Perry Hotel last Thursday night.
Mrs. Avery Lee, president,
gave a report of activities at the
park located on the southeastern
side of the city, including erec
tion of poles for the junior base
ball field, pouring of the cement
for the tennis court and laying
out and marking the areas to be
used for various activities. It is
hoped the baseball field will be
ready for next season and that
the tennis court can be in use
!soon.
Claude Lewis, recreational di
rector for the City of Warner
Robins, the guest speaker, said
he feels that Perry is large
enough to hire a recreation direc
tor and he believes the program
would be amply supported if a
director were hired. He said a
volunteer worker program will
not work; that it will be neces
sary to get a qualified director
before the program will be run
right.
“A full time program will grow
into a big business and you
should be sold on it so that, as
your program grows, you will
be willing to work to raise the
money to make it prosper,” he
said. "You would have to assure
yourselves and your director that
you could raise money for next
year’s budget.”
Mr. Lewis was introduced by
Billy Ethridge.
The Perry Business Women’s
Club was presented the Frank
Satterfield Memorial Award for
the local club that does most
service in behalf of the Club
Council and the community.
Oclahatchee has been chosen
as the name for the recreation
park, it was annunced at the
meeting.
Contributions are still being
received by the Club Council. If
you would like to make a cash
donation or help in some other
way, please get in touch with
Terry Waldorf, treasurer, or any
member of the council. Your
contribution can help to speed
up the development of this land
for immediate use.
Tolleson Supply Company,
Inc., donated S9OO worth of con
crete and poured the tennis
court.
Gardner Watson, Malcolm
Reese and Mrs. Wordna Gray
were elected to the board of
trustees for three-year terms.

Membership Drive
Launched by FB
Dr. Harry Brown, president of
the Georgia Farm Bureau, spoke
to the Houston County Farm Bu
reau Tuesday night to kick off
the 1962 membership drive.
Dr. Brown began his work with
agriculture as County Agent for
Fulton County. Among his other
accomplishments for agriculture
are State Director of the Etxen
sion Service and Assistant Sec
retary of Agriculture in the
Roosevelt administration.
“Group action is the only way
farmers will settle their farm
problems,” said Dr. Brown. “Less
that 9% of our population are
commercial farmers who produce
food, the bgigest bargain on the
market today.”
“One hour's factory labor will
buy twice as much steak, three
times as much bacon and 2V6
times as much milk as 20 years
ago. This was done as the pro
ductive efficiency of the farmer
rose twice as fast as the indus
trial worker.”
“This 9% of our population
provides a market of S4O billion,
almost as much as the entire de
fense budget. Yet the farmer’s
net income has gone down 10%
while costs have risen 45%.”
“Our efficient agraculture is
one of four greatest weapons”
said Dr. Brown. “Russia’s agri
culture today is about where
ours was at the turn of the Cen
tury. It takes one farm worker
to support five in Russia while
one American farmer produces
for 26.”
New officers nominated and
elected were Adam Andel, presi
dent; Mrs. C. D. Perfect, ladies’
president; Richard Johnson, vice
president; Allen Tabor, secre
tary, and Walter Gray Jr., treas
urer.
